“A Just Right Place To Stay”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

It's not a chain, it's not brand new, it's not pretentious, it's neither slick or fancy, but these are qualities I try to avoid in a hotel, so in that sense the Birchwood Inn is, from my standpoint, just right. The staff are very helpful, friendly, and capable.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable, each one has its own little "front porch" that looks out over a large courtyard containing the pool, shuffleboard courts, numerous gathering areas, the fire pit, the barbeque area, and some very nice shade trees. When you are out on your "porch" you will almost certainly strike up numerous conversations with other guests who are, in my experience, consistently very friendly, or you may host a gathering of friends there discussing past and future Northern Michigan adventures. The Inn is very well suited to a scenario where a group of friends rents several rooms and uses it as a "base of operations" for bandying about Northern Michigan, this was the context for my stay.

The continental breakfast is not expansive in its breadth of offerings but it is very suitable to get your day started. You may meet other travelers in the comfortable meeting room while you are sipping your morning coffee who become new friends. You may have a long conversation with the owner, Mr. Shumway, whose knowledge of Northern Michigan geography, history, and activity possibilities is encyclopedic, either way you will have a good start to your day.

My friends and I just finished a painting workshop this week. The owners, staff and facilities were great. The staff went out of their way to help us with what ever we required. The rooms are nostalgic and extremely clean. They also have a heated pool. The breakfast had eggs, rolls, bagels, coffee and juice. The location is beautiful surrounded by horse farms and riding lessons of desired. I can't wait to visit Birchwood again.

We love traveling to beautiful northern Michigan and have stayed at numerous B&Bs and chain hotels. This rustic and unassuming hotel made out trip so much more enjoyable. Why? The cost was so reasonable that we had more money budgeted for some of the many more opportunities that the area offers! It was fun coming home with homemade mustards, beef jerky, and other sauces! We enjoyed lunches at Pond Hill Farm and bought some items at The Harbor Springs Fair. We were able to invest money in the local community and that always is a joy! The setting for the hotel is beautiful and quiet. In the courtyard there is a fire pit and we made friends and had lovely conversations with other guests. Yes it is older and dated, but we are up north for the north, not an over padded room. Our room was clean and the staff was so nice! If someone had a rude experience, I wonder more about how the staff may have been treated. We will certainly stay there from now on. I may bring my own pillow, but I often do :)

We were looking forward to three nights at this Inn. We were disappointed with the mattress (the kind you both roll into the middle and end up holding on to the sides), the pillows seemed as if they were filled with rolled socks. the toilet barely flushed, the tub was dirty, "breakfast" uneatable- with the cheapest coffee and stale bagels. We also heard the conversations through the wall of the people on both sides. Not very romantic! Will never stay here again. "Surprisingly affordable" translates into "surprisingly shabby".

Room Tip: Chose a different hotel.

I've stayed at the Birchwood Inn several times; in both the summer and winter. And I've read the reviews; both positive and negative. So let me sum it up this way. If you're looking for a shiny new resort with all the finest finishes and latest 'up north' decorating fashion, then you will probably be disappointed with the Birchwood Inn. But if you are looking for a convenient, friendly and authentic place to call home in northern Michigan, then the Birchwood Inn can't be beat!

The rooms are quite comfortable, and the Great Room is charming and delightful. It's decorated with old maps and authentic pictures and photographs of Harbor Springs (way) 'back in the day', as well as other memorabilia. It has a wood burning fireplace and piano. And it's a great place to enjoy your continental breakfast before embarking on your day's activities!

The Birchwood Inn has just what you want in a family-friendly motor lodge -- clean, comfortable rooms; a we-love-pets attitude; lots of knotty pine and board games in the great room; and a restful setting overlooking Lake Michigan and horse pastures. Sure, it's a little dated and could use some freshening here and there, but it's not the place to go if you're looking for new and improved. Go here for a heavy dose of nostalgia, to unplug and unwind. We've stayed here in the summer and in the winter, as a base for water and snow sports. The family suites are a great choice -- two separate rooms, allowing the night owls to stay up without disturbing the early risers already in bed.

My husband and I stayed at The Birchwood Inn on October 13-14. Their rates are reasonable and the room was everything we hoped for; super clean, retro style décor, friendly staff, quiet and close to The Tunnel of Trees. It was an amazing getaway and brought us back in time.
