Owner description: Windmill Island Gardens is home to de Zwaan windmill, the last mill allowed to be transported from the Netherlands. de Zwaan still functions by grinding locally-grown grain into flour that is sold to visitors and local businesses. A highlight of visiting is a tour of this historic working windmill. Visitors can enjoy music from our antique Dutch street organ given to the City of Holland by the City of Amsterdam after World War II. Children can also ride on our antique carousel from the Netherlands. There are several other replica Dutch buildings and shops. The Island is home to beautiful gardens which feature tulips in the spring followed by beautiful annuals and perennials throughout the summer. Please note that the Island is open seasonally, April 14 - October 7, 2018. Last tickets sold at 5 pm.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Food available for purchase

Here's your chance to see a real, working windmill without leaving the Midwest. The windmill was brought over from Europe in pieces, reassembled here and actually grinds grain. During spring, summer and fall, you can go into the windmill. The entire area looks like it came right out of Europe. The gardens are lovely. It seemed a little pricey (I think we paid around $15 entry). Off-season, from mid-October to mid-April, you can still view it from outside, but the rest of the area is not open.

What a nice upside surprise. The 18th century Dutch windmill, street organ and carousel are all authentic, not recreations. The guides were welcoming & very informative. The grounds & gardens are lovely; and, the views as you climb the windmill with your knowledgeable & friendly guide are beautiful. We would love to be able to return some spring when the tulips are in bloom.

We visited Windmill Island during a recent trip to Michigan. The gardens were beautiful and well groomed, even though it was late in the growing season. We were greeted as we entered the area and the features of the gardens were thoroughly explained. The windmill was under construction, but a great video of the windmill and its history was provided. We were given a reduced price because of the renovations, but it would have been nice if this information had been provided before we reached the gardens. The gift shop staff was very helpful and provided a lot of information about the property. We would like to return when the windmill is operational.

We stopped by Windmill Island late September. They were very upfront at the gate that the Windmill was under construction and not currently working/together. We decided to check out the park/village anyway. The weather was lovely and the place was not very busy. There was a new play-scape that the children (young and old enjoyed). My daughter got a solo ride on the carousel. We tried out the wooden shoes in the shop and just had a nice time. The gardens were pretty and the workers were friendly and knowledgeable.

The carousel and playground alone will keep your kids entertained, but a walk to the windmill to see the operations and watch the dancers is a must. The grounds are well kept and full of beautiful flowers. We enjoyed the indoor miniature village and old time organ playing. The gift shop has some Dutch treats we haven't been able to find other places, so we had to stock up on cookies. Great place to spend a few hours on a nice day!
