Owner description: Windmill Island Gardens is home to de Zwaan windmill, the last mill allowed to be transported from the Netherlands. de Zwaan still functions by grinding locally-grown grain into flour that is sold to visitors and local businesses. A highlight of visiting is a tour of this historic working windmill. Visitors can enjoy music from our antique Dutch street organ given to the City of Holland by the City of Amsterdam after World War II. Children can also ride on our antique carousel from the Netherlands. There are several other replica Dutch buildings and shops. The Island is home to beautiful gardens which feature tulips in the spring followed by beautiful annuals and perennials throughout the summer. Please note that the Island is open seasonally, April 14 - October 7, 2018. Last tickets sold at 5 pm.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Food available for purchase

This was our second visit but we had the grands this time. The windmill tour was very interesting for the grands ( 5 and 7) and gave them each something to talk about. This was our second go around of Dutch Dancing ( the first at " The Dutch Village") so the lack of newness did not hold their attention. The grands did enjoy the peacock, children's garden, the old Merry Go Round and Play ground. My husband and I always enjoy flower displays where we travel and these are exceptional. Buy the combination ticket if considering going to the Dutch Village also.

Even though we were too late for the tulips, there were other flowers in bloom. It was fun going to the few shops and then seeing the diorama. The walk to the windmill is not far and certainly worth the time to see. We saw it after we went to Nelis Dutch Village which is a great place to take children.

Nice two hour attraction. Even after tulip season is over the gardens and grounds are well kept and the staff is friendly and helpful. The tour of the windmill is the highlight and worth the price of admission all on its own. Even without the tulips there are some great pictures to be had with the windmill, the "canal", and the bridges. The miniature village diorama is nice and the few shops are what one would expect at a tourist attraction sort of place. I wouldn't come to Holland MI just for this attraction, but wouldn't miss it if I were in the area.

The windmill was quite interesting. I love "visiting" history and other cultures, so this made a pleasant afternoon not far from home. The rest of the park was underwhelming, but the windmill was worth the trip.

Windmill Island is just a couple of blocks north of downtown, but you feel like you're in the middle of the marshes of Holland - a wonderful setting. I enjoyed the Dutch replica buildings and buying real Dutch cheese on the "street," but the real star is the Windmill. A nice walk over a drawbridge and along the (bloomed out) tulip fields, with Friesian horses grazing a little way off. The windmill is the last ever to be exported from the Netherlands, and it was re-erected atop a brick structure to make sure the sails were high enough to catch the wind. Yes, they go around, yes, the mill still grinds flour (sold out when I was there). The tour, which climbs up the four levels inside the mill, shows you how the miller would use a dumbwaiter-type lift to bring up the sacks of grain, but also how he would "sharpen" the grindstones, etc. We enjoyed it, and enjoyed walking out onto the circular deck and seeing how the sails could be moved to almost any direction to catch the prevailing wind. I think the cost for adults was about $12 (?), we spent about 2 hours there. Kids will enjoy the vintage merry-go-round, the wooden shoes for sale, a little playground, fudge-making, etc.
