“Clean and good value”

This motel is older, but it is in a great area and it is clean. If you need the most modern facility with everything perfect, it may not be the hotel for you. It is however, quite clean and in a great location. The owners were also very friendly and personable. The price we paid made it a good value also.

My family has stayed here many, many times for winter carnival, and while it's certainly not up to the standards of a chain hotel, it has a certain charm. We usually stay in the bigger rooms that can't be seen from the main road, and they kind of feel like you're staying at Grandma's. The rooms have always been clean and the view of the portage is great. The beds and furniture are a bit old, but I find them comfortable. The attached restaurant was recently renovated and serves good food. The owners are helpful (though they have cats running around the office, fair warning if you're allergic).

Room Tip: If you need a bigger room, the ones below street level are nicer. I can't remember the room num...

At the last minute on graduation weekend we had to book rooms here sight unseen for $108 per room per night. We thought we were coming to pick up our son, but turned out he got a summer internship instead. So pick-up turned into visit. First of all I am not a snob, we usually stay at the Travel lodge which is not the Hilton. However, they do have comfortable beds, a pool, sauna, hot tub, modern TVs that work, a nice continental breakfast and all for $65 per room per night. This motel was rundown, broken TVs, VERY uncomfortable beds, it smelled, you name it! When we checked in the manager immediately ran our credit card for the amount owed. Since when does that happen(?), should have been our first clue. When we found out that there were rooms available at the Travel lodge for the next night, they refused to refund our $ for the second night to allow us to move to better accommodations. Overall a crummy experience!!!!! Will never stay there again and will tell anyone else we meet not to stay there either! I don't know how much they usually charge, but REALLY just because it was graduation weekend does not mean you should price gouge.

Room Tip: Do not stay here!

The hotel is in a great location so I gave this average rating (or I would have rated 2 stars). This motel is old style, rooms haven't been updated, beds were soft, TV's old. On the positive side, location is right near the bridge on the water so views were great. Your right down town so you can walk to restraurants and bars. The room was clean and the people who work there very nice. The price was too high for rooms that haven't been updated but all other hotels were full. One other advantage of this hotel, you can get reservations when the other hotels are full.

Room Tip: end rooms on the river side would be a good choice. Rooms on the road side may be noisy. our room...

We stayed here one night during our week long trip to Michigan's UP. We wanted to experience non-traditional, run-of-the-mill chain hotels on this trip. The Downtowner is a throw back to the 1970s, which was fun. The room was clean, with dated but not worn out furniture. The bed was comfortable. Small bathroom. We were on the second floor and had a small picnic area on the roof over the first floor office. The owner was friendly and so were the cats. We especially enjoyed meeting Lenny, the tabby/bobcat. The location is right downtown and we could walk to restaurants/brewery.

Room Tip: Ask for second floor and use the porch. Nice view of river.

A Mom and Pop motel run by good people. The motel is cheap, central and very clean, what else can you ask for? Sure, the decorations is dated, but that adds to the charm. If you are looking for a bed, good coffee in the morning and free internet the Downtowner is for you.
