Second time here. Since we're from Canada, we don't get here often. Today, we made a conscious decision to stay overnight in Ironwood so we could stay at the Budget Host here (which we have reviewed before) AND that was so we could come to this restaurant for supper. We literally have put off meals all day driving so we would have a good appetite for the great meals here!
The host seated us in a booth (great as they are large) after a short wait. Being Saturday supper time, and given the popularity of this restaurant, we were pleased the wait was less than 10 minutes stated when we walked in.
Our server, Kristine, was smiley, friendly and social. She took our drink orders and got them so we had some time to check out the menu. As my husband had come specifically for steak, he ordered the 16 oz. Black Angus rib eye, along with a baked potato and brown beans as the sides. I ordered the 12 oz. Black Angys rib eye, with mashed potatoes and a Ceasar salad as the two sides. Mashed are made in house from potatoes, not a mix. Salad dressing was creamy but not too much so and the taste was good. Steaks were excellent, done medium - rare as requested and they WERE actually that! No sending these back!
The mushrooms and onions side we had asked for seemed a tad small to us and we mentioned that to our server. She explained that that was 1 order which we had asked to split, and I agreed that this was the case. We were asking not criticizing. Kristine took it upon herself to talk to the chef and then informed us very politely that the chef was making us more of the side since we had expressed that we felt the size was not very large. Now THAT is working for the customer! Thank you Kristine, chef and management.
Our opinion still stands that the Maplewood Steakhouse is well worth aiming for if you are traveling across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan along hwy 2 east of Wisconsin. Awesome!
