I stopped there while with a friend checking out the Kalamazoo mall. We ate there around 130. The appeal of sitting outside was what had us stop at this restaurant. The waitress was friendly and attentive. The highlight of our meal was the Hawaiian Martini, we planned on having one but they were so good we both ended up getting a second. The menu offers some very unique items. the red beans and rice side was very tasty as was the fried okra. The fried okra is not in deep fried in batter which made it even better. My friend had the macaroni and cheese and enjoyed that. I would come here again if in the area.

In the heart of the newly revived Kalamazoo downtown amongst all the chic very expensive restaurants sits The Union. Call it a sports bar, call it a college kid hangout, call it whatever you like, I call it good food.

Menu is simple, which means you know what you ordered and what it should taste like. The chef does an awesome job and the servers simply don't stop until you're happy. The bartender can you tell you the back story on every beer (and there are lots) they sell and I can imagine that if we had been there at night with music that it would have been a hoppin' joint.

Enjoy!

CHILI was GOOD. BLACKENED CHICKEN sandwich was GREAT. I think they had an off night with the Mesquite pulled CHICKEN WRAP because it was TOO DRY AND BLAND. It was filled with carrot matchsticks, and pretty much nothing else. Barely a hint of mesquite flavor, and my chicken was cut into chunks instead of "pulled" (too dry to pull maybe?) The flavored whipped cream cheese was pretty much non-existent.

We didn't return the chicken wrap to the kitchen because we just wanted to hurry and leave. The LIVE MUSIC was WAY TOO LOUD to hear each other without saying "what?!" every single time. Even with requests directly to the band by patrons to turn it down, there was no volume change.

We will try this place again, but probably when we're sure there won't be live music. It's unfortunate because we love live bands.

In the heart of downtown Kalamazoo, the Union is a great spot for a night out or just a good meal. The prices are what you would expect for a nicer restaurant in the downtown area, but they have some great specials during the day, including a happy hour on Fridays. On Friday and Saturday nights (plus Thursdays in the summer), the Union also has free, live music at 9pm. Make sure to get there early because the place fills up quick!
