“It has it all”
Reviewed 9 September 2012

We almost hesitate to write this review as we would hate for our favorite restaurant to become so popular that we would have to wait to get in. They do take reservations though. We found Zooroonas over 2 years ago and every time we go there we are rewarded.
First the atmosphere is lovely from the twinkle lights on the ceiling and multidimensionsal tree to the paintings depicting the middle east.
The music is always lovely and appropriate for dining. It is relaxing and adds to the experience rather than compete with it as in some places.
The staff although changing always seems accomodating no matter how busy they are. The food...ahhh, well I would say it was not only authentic but as good or even better than we enjoyed in Marrikesh and certainly at a very reasonable price.
If you want a unique, special and certainly a romantic experience this is your place. Oh and my husband says, "Don't forget the belly dancers"...they are there on Friday nights!

“Delicious, Memorable and Inspired”
Reviewed 3 September 2012

Zooroona is a totally fabulous dining experience, and then some! We'd say it is the best Middle Eastern food we've ever had, but that is simply not saying enough. The food is among the very best we've had anywhere of any cuisine, from Seattle to Paris. It is inspired!
It is served simply, with vision rather than pretense. The prices are reasonable, the service is adequate, and the environment is pleasant. Sunday nights there is an amazing violinist playing a remarkable fusion of Middle East, Indian, Bluegrass and American Pop.
The backstory of our visit may offer some perspective as you weigh your own options. Kalamazoo is the eastern terminus of our road trip from our Whidbey Island home, near Seattle. We are loving parents hauling a car full of stuff to Kalamazoo College for our freshman son! We had been planning to sup at Rasa Ria or Saffron, based solely upon TripAdvisor reviews. Both were closed.
Zooroona, having only one review, was not on our list, but it's right by the aforementioned, so we took a look and liked what we saw. The understated oasis decor, the imaginative seating and cozy hideaways looked inviting.
The menu looked simultaneously delicious and largely unfamiliar... but we are adventurous diners. While all that can occasionally lead to disappointment or indigestion, at Zooroona it opens the door to bliss.
There are the standards like spicy Egyptian falafel and dolmes (dolmades for any of an Athenian mindset), but they are among the best we have ever had. We had never set eyes on Eggplant Mazza* or Kibbeh Mikliyah** before, but now we know we have been missing something memorable. And we know we want to come back.
If any of the following makes you salivate, stop reading and start running to Zooroona:
- Pan-seared fresh Lake Michigan Whitefish crusted in light curry and chickpea flour with an apricot-plum-tomato-cilantro sauce over couscous.
- Lamb Fessenjoon: braised lamb in a walnut and pomegrenate sauce served over spiced rice.
- Grilled skewers of Arabic-spiced beef tenderloin served atop fragrant Zooroona Basmati rice
The list goes on and on, so bring your friends and family and taste even more!

*Eggplant Mazza: roasted eggplant diced with red and green sweet peppers, tomato and spring onion tossed in a light pomegranate molasses dressing.
**Kibbeh Mikliyah: Sauteed minced lamb and beef, mixed with red onion, bulgur wheat, pine nuts and spices, then lightly fried.

“Fine Middle eastern food.”
Reviewed 30 July 2012

A higher standard than Shawarma king but also reflected in the prices. The owner of Tiffany's started this. Great food and up until the last time excellent service. We started going here when they first opened and hadn't begun to really dive into middle eastern cuisine. They had a waiter named Paul who helped us translate the menu but also who unfortunately isn't there anymore. Tried many new things, loved them all. House platter is the best deal and it gives you a chance to sample some of the best the have. YUM YUM YUM
