Mangia Pizza & Pasta Co
Ranked #54 of 341 Restaurants in Kalamazoo
Price range: US$10 - US$19
Cuisines: Italian
Description: Mangia Pizza & Pasta Co. is yet another chapter in a family tradition in restaurants that began when Amo and Rose Scotese opened La Cantina in Paw Paw in 1936. Their grandson Emilio Dacoba and his wife Maria, currently part owners of La Cantina with other family members, opened their own restaurant, Mangia, Mangia, in 2008 in downtown Kalamazoo. The downtown restaurant features traditional Italian dining with many of the recipes passed down from Nonna Rosa, as Emilio calls his grandmother. Its name is the admonition of every Italian grandmother to family and friends at her dining table to "Eat, eat!" Emilio and Maria, however, thought the west side of Kalamazoo was prime for a casual, family restaurant. When the opportunity came in the fall of 2012 to purchase the Mi Ranchito restaurant building on 9th Street, Mangia Pizza & Pasta was born. The rustic, stucco interior of the former Mexican restaurant fell right in line with their plans to transform it into an Italian style cantina with a casual atmosphere. To go along with the casual atmosphere, MP&P has a beautiful outdoor patio off the bar. We offer casual Italian and American family-style dining in a comfortable setting, but with a taste and flair you wouldn't expect to find in your typical neighborhood restaurant. We said MP&P would be comfortable, not typical.

We have ate here twice, first time just two of us - second time a group of 10. Service both times was lacking, waiters were personable but not highly attentive. For large party food was not even close to being delivered at the same time - at least 15 minutes from first to last person being served. Chicken dishes have been good on both trips, but pizza - if I want an artichoke pizza again there are much better places here in Kalamazoo....the pizza sauce had a metallic, overly sweet taste - and toppings were very sparse (and non-existent) on many pieces of a large.

Our server, Damenick, has always been so great to my family and I. I always see the staff so helpful to one another which is really great to see. The food is pretty good which makes the atmosphere a good setting. I wish the drinks could be a little bigger for their price but other than that we enjoy going to Mangia!

I have been reading the reviews on here and I'm just lost. We had a family get together last night here. Our waiter Edger was top shelve. The food was amazing. We all left not feeling very good however. Not anything they did wrong however, our will power to stop eating didn't work, we were stuffed. Everyone raved how it was so good and didn't want to stop eating. Great job, we really enjoyed it. We will be back.

Dinner started off great, waiter put in order for appetizers and kids meals right away. Wife and I ordered our courses 5 minutes later. Kids food came timely...they ate...they ate...40 minutes later I asked our waiter the status of our order and he apologized and inidicated it had not been started yet and didn't know when it would be up. A group of 40 had got their order in just ahead of us. Close to an hour after the kids had started eating, management came over by request...not much in the way of apology or willing to make it right. In the end, we left with kids having already eaten and our meals in a leftover box. Happy 40th birthday to my wife!!!!

Never understand why these "one time" Groupon patrons feel compelled to eat for free and then complain about the service. I have never had a bad experience at Mangia Pizza and Pasta. Consistently good food and great service. Perhaps, you would be more comfortable at a fast food restaurant where you can select your table yourself and you don't have to tip.
