With my wife finishing up yet another tax season I wanted to offer something special. I had seen a sign offering tours of this historic bed & breakfast/restaurant in the afternoon - and thought this might be a nice way to reward all of her hard work.
This 100+ year old home is, according to our guide - technically a castle because it has a tower - not one but two. It overlooks downtown Kalamazoo. There are other reviews of the restaurant and bed/breakfast options to be found on TA - but we only took the tour so I'm unable to comment on food or comfort.
For our purposes - it was a very nice event. We were joined by a group of women who had gathered for a lunch - so instead of just us two we had, perhaps, 10 total. The guide (Franklin) has not worked very long at the facility but was interesting and suprisingly knowledgable (sp?) about the structure and the history. What was expected to be a 45 minute tour ($10 per person) ended up close to 1 1/2 hours due to questions and discussions.
The building has much of the original woodwork and artwork, but it is clear that some repairs are needed - and from what we saw - being aggressively attacked. I'd be interested in seeing it again a year from now! We saw many of the rooms available for the B&B - those who were not occupied. Beautiful!
Another time in my life I'd be very interested in an overnight and/or a fancy dinner. Finances don't allow that - but it was nice to "rub shoulders" with what the rich could build and enjoy for an afternoon. Lunch before the tour would have been nice - and they do have a full bar - before or after the tour.
