“A great place gone bad”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2010

My wife and I have been staying here for years (years even before AJ bought it). The rooms still contain the same decor as they did 18+ years ago. Rooms are now well worn, furniture with holes, and very dirty.

AJ continues to be a friendly inn keeper but has not invested anyting back into the property.

After years of staying at the White Rabbit several times a year, we will not return.

Over the years, we've stayed here and it has REALLY gone downhill. Dust everywhere in our room, a ripped toilet seat ( for at least two years), blinds that do not work, holes in the roofs. YIKES! I'm thinking AJ does not want to put any $$ in the place because he knows he can sell the place/land for a great deal of money. Anyway -- there are many better places to stay in this area.

We've stayed in the area several times and happened upon this little gem on our last trip. We're always looking for pet-friendly lodging and the accommodations, location, service and price are a real value for southwest Michigan. Dusty's cabin was very roomy and perfect for two adults and our dog. You can't beat the hot tub and the delicious pastries and coffee in the morning. The owner, A.J., made us feel very welcome and was a great resource for places to see in the area. We'll definitely be making a trip back in the winter months!!

This was my first trip to the White Rabbit Inn and it was fantastic! We stayed in Bill's cabin and enjoyed a relaxing night in a great area. A.J., the innkeeper, was essential to our wonderful trip - he recommended some great breweries in the area when he found out we were beer drinkers. He clearly knows of everything there is to do in the area and makes for some good conversation. The room cabin was cozy and wooded but not cheesy. The hot tub was clean and ready for us when we got there. I would highly recommend WRI and can't wait to go back! Not just dog friendly but dog lovers!

My wife and I had a great time spending 4 nights at the White Rabbit Inn - just as we've had on our previous visits. We always rent the free-standing (and dog-friendly) "Dusty's Cabin," and love the huge amount of space, the wood-burning stove/fireplace, the skylights, and the private hot tub with a view of the woods just off the back room of the cabin. Dusty's Cabin also has a full kitchen, so you can bring food and cook a special meal for those nights you don't feel like going out. We also really like White Rabbit's location - extremely close to wineries, Warren Dunes, antique shops, walking distance to the beach, and is only a few minutes drive from New Buffalo. Perhaps best of all is White Rabbit's Innkeeper A.J. - he's always there with a warm greeting, a cookie for our dog, and great conversation over breakfast (be sure to have one of the pastries). He's personal, friendly, and will always help you with whatever you need. We've always enjoyed our past summer visits to White Rabbit, but we had to take our vacation early this year. The weather was just what you'd expect in early March - chilly and rainy - and we didn't mind it one bit. The luck from Dusty the horse's horseshoe over the door really worked - we built warm fires, enjoyed the hot tub at night, played with our dog, took long walks, and appreciated 4 days of quiet and friendliness in a great place near the lake and away from the craziness of Chicago. Thanks to A.J. and our "old friend" Dusty's Cabin, we'll keep coming back to White Rabbit.

Caveat: we base this review on only one hour of experience.

We had reservations for 2 nights at the White Rabbit. We chose this property based on the website descriptions and online testimonials. Unfortunately, upon walking in (Bill's cabin) we immediately knew we made a mistake. The smell of mold (or maybe mildew) hung in the air. Because it was late and the host, AJ, was a nice guy we tried figuring out the culprit to the odor. Upon closer inspection we found a dirty shower curtain liner, some stains on the very old bedspread, and the towels smelled terrible and looked like they were 10 years old (frayed and thin). Again, it was late and we really didn't want to turn around and sleeping there was not an option, so after a few tears and an uncomfortable discussion with the host, we decided to leave. We did feel badly about abandoning our reservations so we offered to pay $100.00 for the hour we spent there, which they gladly accepted. Upon further reflection, there were other issues with the property, but the facts we speak to in the first part of this review are sufficient enough to back up our rating. I do know others who had a good experience here, but I can't see why. Thankfully we drove a bit down the road and found a vacancy in an Inn that was clean and modern.

Needs some maintenance work inside and out. Smells of urine and musty toilet seat needs replaced. Wooden sidewalks need repaired. Was at one time a very quaint place to stay I'm sure we stayed in #1 garden room.
