“Causeway making a slow comeback”
Reviewed 16 February 2010

I have stayed at this hotel for an annual conference for several years. When it was a Holiday Inn, management let if fall apart. Now the Causeway people are trying to renovate (surprising in this economy) and it will take awhile. Our second room floor had new furniture, carpeting, and flat screen TV. The beds were old but comfortable. The bathroom is still ancient and needs better cleaning. As another reviewer stated, the grime is evident in the tub; at least staff should keep it clean until renovated. Rooms also have a small fridge and microwave. The friendly desk clerk said the fifth floor has been completed so I suggest you request that floor if you stay here. It was sold out for the conference. We always feel safe here; hotel is convenient to expressway and getting downtown. A restaurant is onsite, but we didn't eat there as we had meals served in their banquest halls. The food there was good and signs are evident there also that the renovation is ongoing. Did not see their indoor pool or exercise center although a member of our party exercised and said offerings were slim. One computer was located in the lobby for customer use.

While I understand that they are "renovating" the Hotel, there is no excuse for the condition of the rooms they still rent, or the hallways etc.. Having cardboard over the doors to rooms under renovation with yellow tape across it as well screamed "crime scene". My particular room had dark MOLD all around the top of the bath tub and the wallpaper was peeling away from the walls in the bathroom. A member of our group checked into their room only to find the toilet "full" and not flushed. Obvious that the room wasn't cleaned properly. Hotel staff was advised but seemed not to care. Another member of the group didn't have a functioning drain on the bathroom sink the whole weekend, and had to live with it. The most outrageous thing was the room a member of our group had that had obvious blood splatter on the curtains and blood stains on the floor. All this ambience for the low low price of $89.00 a night. Thank god we had activities away from the Hotel that kept our time there to a minimum. We should have left and demanded a refund but because we were away from the place alot and had a large group of kids with us we stuck it out. P.S. South Lansing is not the nicest place to be either. Spend more money and stay in East Lansing or Downtown Lansing.

I stay here once a year at an annual convention I attend. I'd always felt so sorry for this hotel, it was like some poor, forgotten soul. However, hope looms on the horizon. Causeway Bay actually seems to take an interest in this property now that they've purchased it. My stay was for 5 nights. The first thing I noticed was that the 'smell' of the old HolidayInn South was gone!! Finally. After all these years, somebody did a real, honest to goodness deep cleaning. The room hadn't been redecorated but the mattresses were new, the towels were now plush bath sheets (with a few of the old, bare towels mixed in) and the staff was outstanding. Our air conditioning unit ran like a champ. /No flat-screen TV in our room, but the one we had worked fine./ Also, the nice thing about the windows in the hotel is that you can actually open them to let in fresh air! There was construction going on while we were there, but it really didn't intrude upon our sleep or activities. Yes, there are still some old cosmetic problems hanging around needing repair, like some peeling wallpaper in some of the corners, water-stained curtain liners, old decor, etc...but I don't think it's a feasible idea to totally close the hotel and do a top to bottom rehab. For the most part, my stay was a pleasant surprise from previous years. It was a really nice surprise to have a gentleman (who I assume was a manager) in the lobby one morning asking if everything was okay and if anyone needed anything. Wow! Nothing like that ever happened in the old 'Holiday Inn' days. The staff was great, all requests were responded to in a timely manner. And I know it's a small thing, but it was so nice to have those new bath sheets instead of the old, bare towels. If they keep on track, I see this hotel making a complete turn-around. /They do need to work on the speed of their wireless connection, but then, that's probably not their highest priority. It is true that the hotel is definitely not in a fashionable part of town at all, but I've never felt unsafe. With the highways close by, any part of Lansing is readily accesible from its location. Oh, and the shuttle service got my roomate to & from all her connections on-time. On the whole, this is not a 'destination' hotel, but it is a completely adequate one at this time. I hope it only gets better with the new ownership.

Curtain ripped and falling off the hangers, Molding ripped off the dresser, Clock radio where the minutes would not change - so could only wake up at 45 after the hour. Also the a/c system only worked for two minutes then shut off - I had to put it at 60 degrees to get it to run for more than 5 minutes. I had a personal keychain with thermostat - the room was 78 degrees! The new flat screen television was screwed to the aforementioned dresser so it could not be turned to be seen well from either of the beds. The beds we OK - but had no bed skirts exposing the very dirty old box springs. UGH... The hotel is being renovated - a problem while presenting a seminar due to the noise - though they did stop when participants complained to the front desk.

Staff were apologetic and the manager although less apologetic did have $10.00 taken off the bill.

They are doing a lot of work there and I do expect once done it will be a nice hotel but for now - STAY AWAY!

The Causeway Bay Hotel group has purchased the old South Lansing Holiday Inn lock, stock, and barrel. They put CB stickers on the wastebaskets and room guest guides and are still using the H.Inn vans.

The age is showing in the rooms. Do not look under the shower mat! The shower faucet is loose and the water temperature will vary according to your neighbors' activities. The towels are on the thin side, but there are plenty of them. The shower rod is the old-fashioned straight line type. The furniture is ancient and the bottom of the drawers are stained, as is the carpet. (Wear your slippers and consider lining the drawers with plastic.) The A/C works but is noisy. The lock & key card system is on its last legs. Nearly everyone in our group had problems at least once (and we don't all carry cell phones, either). The bedspread looks old, too. Some of the bartenders are competent, but beverages and supplies are limited (out of Coors Light one night and no olives for martinis). The elevators are plastered with posters featuring French toast but it's not available because the menu has been changed.

On the bright side, the walls and doors are thick and sound doesn't travel well. The mattress is good. Shampoo, conditioner, and lotion are provided. The courtyard is being reconstructed to attract receptions and the bar has been remodeled with free munchies.

I suggest meeting planners taste all the food before ordering. Some meals were quite tasty (I loved the cranberry vinaigrette) and some were not. Service was somewhat disorganized but all the servers I encountered were polite and helpful.

This property is now called the Causeway Bay Hotel and I stayed they. The room was large with brand new carpeting. I had a quiet room overlooking the back parking area. Very quiet and very clean. They are undergoing remodelling and hope to be a Best Western soon. The MSU rate was just 68 bucks--a steal. (Yes, they had a fire on the roof recently but it didn't effect my room). Free shuttle to the airport a plus. So bottom line is this is a great value if you don't mind staying in not so scenic South Lansing.
