We traveled as a group of 4 guys for 4 days of golf and stayed 3 nights in a French Country Villa. The 2 courses we could play were in great shape but the 3rd course was closed because of flooding. The Villa was clean and modern with a full kitchen including a dishwasher and was cleaned daily while we were on the course. The breakfast buffet was standard breakfast food (bacon eggs sausage homefries waffles) but it was hot, fresh and well prepared. We had one dinner in the bar/restaurant and it was excellent. All the staff in the lodge and at the golf courses were great but the bartenders and beer cart girls were outstanding. We have already booked again for next year.

As Co-chair of the Annual Soo Curler's Golf Outing who have been going to Garland for over 25 years I would like to commend the Management and Staff for their commitment to making our stay a pleasant one. They more than fulfilled what we had negotiated along with many extras that were really appreciated. The accommodations were good, the food was excellent and the golfing was superb! Our group comprised of about 76 golfers. I highly recommend Garland to anyone wishing good golf, good service and a very pleasant atmosphere.

We stayed two nights in the south wing. Very nice room. The grounds were lovely, staff was friendly and very accomodating. Breakfast was delicious. We did not golf, we were there for the morell festival in Lewiston. We would definitely return.

To All, This year once again our group went up to Garland for about the 15th time in 20 years. We had 8 golfers and to a man we agreed that except for the 3 golf courses (which were in great shape) we were allowed to play, Garland sure has gone downhill. Whoever is running the resort must not realize what is important to some of the guest. Let’s start with the ban on Fountains; we loved the fact that we could play 8 rounds in 5 days on four different courses, not three. Now we don’t have this option. We understand that members should have special privileges but at the same time this is a resort whose own website STILL states you have 4 courses. If we aren’t allowed to play four, please change the website. Even better, close Fountains on weekends, or before noon or on certain days but to eliminate any course to all other golfers doesn’t seem to make business sense. The whirlpool only had about 2 jets working and those didn’t even work well. The pool isn’t heated any longer. You are in Northern Michigan and not Florida. If you’re going to have a pool it should be heated!! The refrigerator in our room didn’t work before we called maintenance or after he left even though he said we just didn’t have it on. The breakfast buffet on Sunday was the only option available. When some of our group asked for menus they were told that Garland didn’t have any menus. They were told that each item was available ala carte but without a menu. The menus magically appeared on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when the crowd left and it didn’t make sense to offer a buffet from Garland’s point of view. The three days the buffet wasn’t available it was almost impossible to get a refill on coffee. This was all 3 days and the place was empty!! We also received to-go cups of coffee about the size of a Dixie cup when we left. Classless! A to-go cup of coffee isn’t going to put you in the poor house. We also were charged for 6 hog roast and two meals off the menu on Saturday’s hog roast when there were only 6 of us at dinner, not 8. Three different times we were either mischarged or short changed after paying and it goes on and on. All the wrong charges were corrected, but there shouldn’t be this many mistakes. It wasn’t just our group that has had this many problems since we heard stories of all the problems at Garland from both employees and patrons of Lewiston Lodge and Tallys. We had never heard bad stories about Garland to this year. The stories we heard were very believable and spoke volumes about the incompetence and total ineptitude of the people who are now making decisions at Garland. It was sad driving away on Wednesday and realizing that we probably weren’t coming back next year based on all the issues which started with another price increase from the previous year and not getting anything for the extra money along with all these other issues.

First thing, golf is great.
BUT I have been coming to this resort for 7 years twice per year and this year has been the worst. No one was there at the resort during the second week of September. I had requested our usual rooms but were told that due to a conference capacity was limited. Being skeptical due to all the negative reviews and the decay of standards over the past 2 years, I decided to monitor the situation myself. I had requested our usual newer renovated single villa close to the parking lot . This one has been updated, has no stains and the beds are comfortable. Since we were told it was not available, we had to accept one of the time share units that are shoddy, and quite a distance from the parking lot. So after day one, I observed no one checked into to the villa (only 2 cars in the parking lot) that has 4 separate main floor units. So I questioned front desk and one person said it was reserved (shocking in that over 7 years we were never able to reserve a room but now someone did??). Next day, still empty. so I asked a different person at front desk and maintenance was the reason. Continued my investigation speaking to housecleaning, peeking into the room, and alas no one was staying. After 3 days of sleeping on beds that are like plywood because mattress are 20 years old, I approached a director as that is their response to people with issues. He could not give me a reason as to why an empty unit was not available. His only response was that the next time I book in I should speak to him. This will be a difficult decision as we found another resort Crystal Mountain with 2 nice courses and a lot of amenities and it was busy. A vast difference from Garland so thank you for giving me the initiative to go elsewhere and I was able to review the room online and reserve the room I wanted which fronted the course with a deck and it was not first come first serve.

Room Tip: roll the dice and hope you get a main lodge as those are updated.
