“A splurge, but worth it”
Reviewed 1 February 2012

The Grand Hotel is a beautiful property, and takes you back in time to a more elegant era. We found everything to be charming at this hotel. We had afternoon tea, which is not included in the rate for staying at the hotel, but it is well worth the extra charge. The porch is comfortable and inviting for reading, or just sitting to enjoy the view. The tour of the gardens was beautiful and informative. The rooms are lovely, and we were fortunate to get one with a view of the water. The food and service in the restaurant were very good.

My husband, 1-year-old daughter, and extended family came to the Grand Hotel in the spring of 2011. We had a wonderful time. There were 5 rooms between us, and they were all decorated differently, which was very unique and neat! The hotel is "old world" luxury with tons of character and charm, and excellent service. Everyone was so attentive, and the food was delicious. We definately want to go back!

This is the second Jazz Festival we've attended at the Grand Hotel. There are lots of places we could travel to, we own a Diamond Resorts timeshare, but not too many destinations will offer us such memories of a lifetime as the Grand Hotel's Jazz Festival. The first time, I didn't realize that we could eat at a few of the Hotel's off-site restaurants, in addition to the main dining room in the hotel. This is a nice option if you've been out riding bikes, hiking or shopping all day and might be too tired to get dressed up to eat dinner in the main dining room. Carry your dinner passes with you and stop in at one of the annex restaurants on your way back to the Hotel. In addition to good food, the hotel also has unique shopps and as a guest for the festival a 15% discount on items. By the way, we have tried every fudge shop in Mackinac and elsewhere. The Grand Hotel makes the absolute best fudge aside from home made. It tasts like fudge should, creamy rich chocolate made with real butter. We rarely left the hotel grounds because there was so much going on and we were always surrounded by excellent live music plus an opportunity to meet the famous musicians. Make sure you check in as early as possible! There are so many activities you won't want to miss a thing. Not only is there the big "cook out" jazz festival, music is abundant throught the hotel and the annex restaurants and bars. It is absolutely amazing music morning, noon and night, numerous receptions with hors d'oeuver's and beverages. You have to experience this event. Book early because the rooms fill fast! Our beautiful memories of this trip will last a lifetime. I love it that the staff is available to get you what you need--sitting on a white rocking chair on the front porch, viewing the spectacular grounds, a staff member will bring you a shrimp apetizer, or a beverage. Whatever you want, don't get up, they'll bring it to you! This really made me feel very pampered! The owners are so involved, they actually greet the guests at a few of the receptions held throughout the event. I met several families that make the Grand Hotel's jazz festival an annual event--some for 10 years plus! We, too will now make it a tradition and make sure we take friends and family, even though we made quite a few friends at the last festival. The Grand also has other packages that look pretty good and I suspect would be well worth it based on my experience with the Jazz Weekend Package. From Chicago to Mackinac is such an easy trip that offers an experience that will leave you with long lasting, happy memories.

Room Tip: I prefer an exterior room with a water view. It might be worth a little more to get a balcony room...

Our Labor Day Jazz Festival has been one of our most popular weekends for many years. We are so pleased you have enjoyed two now as each year is a bit different. We look forward to having you back each season, becoming part of the Grand Hotel extended family.

We loved the wonderful ambience and great service provided by the Grand Hotel. Its location makes it so convenient for exploring the island and its attractions. It was fun dressing up a bit for dinner and then being treated so royally. Good choices for dinner and great breakfast buffet. Rooms are on the smaller side but lovely and well-kept. A super place to unwind and relax!

Room Tip: Ask for a water view - it's fantastic!

The Grand Hotel is an experience! It's really neat to "go back in time." Most people know what they are in for when they go here, and we did too, but if you are used to having space for your family to spread out you are out of luck. The hotel was built in the 1800s when they didn't have King sized beds or luxury bathrooms. When we travel we usually get a suite since we are a family of 5. There aren't many suites here and the ones they have are much more expensive due to the all-inclusive deal. The beds were double beds (not even queen sized). The bathroom is in the room, but only a door swing away from the bed--no privacy whatsoever, and it was TINY! Teeny-tiny. If you have a smaller family it would probably work better, but if you have more than a couple of kids and are used to having space to spread out, this is not the place. I'm glad we went and we did have a great time, but most likely we will not be back.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you felt the room you were in was a bit too small. Every room in our hotel is laid out differently and the sizes are not the same. Generally, with a larger family group we do attempt to put them in a more spacious room. It does not sound like this was the case during your stay. If you do decide to return for a visit, please let the staff know of your room size concerns and they can put requests on your reservation when it is made. We hope to see your family again soon.

Ever since I watched the movie " Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, a visit to the Grand Hotel has been on my bucket list. We found ourselves camping in Michigan this summer and knew we had to make a detour to fulfill this wish. When we checked out the rates ($400 a night) I thought we'd take the ferry, tour Mackinac Island, and pay the nominal fee to enter the hotel premises for a look-see. My sweet and thoughtful husband made an executive decision.....we WOULD spend one night....dang the cost! After all, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, not a time to be practical. We haven't regretted this one bit, in fact, had we not stayed it would have been a huge regret. Mackinac Island has only two motor vehicles, an ambulance and a fire truck. Horse and carriage, and, bikes are the way you get around. There are flowers everywhere.....an explosion of color. The Victorian houses are colorful and gingerbread trimmed surrounded by beautiful gardens. And the hotel.....just spectacular ! It has the longest porch of any summer hotel in the world, with white rocking chairs all lined up, surrounded by pots of red geraniums on steroids. Included in the room rate are a five course dinner and a gourmet breakfast, which were delicious. We also had "high tea" accompanied by a harpist. This experience really was a step back in time.....men required to wear a jacket after 6pm, and a strict "no tipping" policy. What a Grand time we had......scratch this one off our list!

Previously stayed at the Grand Hotel back in the early 80's. At that time it was a fabulous experience. This time was not so good. Our agent got us into the hotel but in the lowest class room - never again. We were right next to the internal stairwell and one of the major water pipes came through the top of the room - so from 6pm to 2am you will not sleep. If you want the better rooms be prepared to pay top dollar. Service and food were excellent. Next time will stay down by the shore.

Room Tip: Do not get the lowest class room - they are interior and by the elevator or stairwell
