My daughter and I just returned from our stay at The GRAND Hotel on Mackinac Island and it truly was GRAND in every way. Words really can't express such a beautiful hotel in such a beautiful location and how very special they make you feel from the moment you step onto the LONG porch with all those comfy white rocking chairs overlooking the beautiful grounds and Lake Michigan.
It gets 5 stars PLUS from us! And we are planning our trip back when it opens in the Spring.

Dee Hunt, Union Mills, IN

Room Tip: The corner suites or front rooms overlooking the Grounds and Lake are our favorites.

There is nothing like the Grand. Build in 1915 in 3 months out of local white pine, this monumental hotel has the reputation of being one of the only hotels on Mackinac Island to have been featured in not one, but two movies. "Somewhere in Time" fans still unite here in late October each year.
We went for the "Celebrate Michigan" weekend rate at the end of September. It was GRAND in every way, and worth the experience. Would I do it again? At this price, yes. At usual prices, no.
You only need some memories once. We stayed the night of Sept 29th. Included in the "Celebrate Michigan (half-price, I think) special was a reception (poorly planned to occur directly before dinner) and dinner. Beer and wine at the reception was included. Not so at dinner, where two glasses of merlot set me back $28! Whoops, now I know. It also included buffet breakfast the next day. It was a weekend to remember. As Mackinac Island always is.
Check out the photos!

Room Tip: There is a rush on "Celebrate Michigan" rooms, so be sure to call early to get one at all...

This place is wonderful. It’s not a hotel it is a destination.

My wife and I are in our twenties and we were both in need of a getaway. I just happened across the hotel reading reviews of great places to go in the midwest. We “settled” on the hotel because we thought it wouldn’t take as much travel time as other trips.

I was a bit worried that everybody on the whole island would be old and that we’d feel very out of place but I was wrong.

I’ll start from the beginning.

Getting to the island is so easy. The ferry company makes everything super convenient. They take your bags and drop them off right at your hotel room door.

Arriving on the island is amazing. It looks like something from a postcard of the 1800’s. Everything is well kept and lots of shops to visit.

We walked to the Grand Hotel from the ferry. There was a “cab” with a wonderful horse and driver waiting at the dock but we thought it would be fun to walk. The walk to the hotel took about 5 minutes but it gorgeous walk and we got a chance to see part of the island.

We got to the hotel well before the allowed check-in time but they didn’t even seem to notice. They checked us right in. Our first impressions of the hotel were amazement. Everything seemed like it was right out of difference century but in a wonderful way. It was well kept and amazing.
There were older people there but it was well balanced and we did not feel out of place at all.

I will give a quick warning. The hotel is actually old. If you’re expecting your room to be like a room at the Four Seasons you are going to be shocked. Each room is classic and unique; the focus is not on the TV. All rooms are decorated in different ways. The rooms are very nice, very well kept, and everything works great. The beds are comfortable.

The meals are a wonderful experience. An experience you can’t even begin to describe. Lots of options but very unique. You do need to dress up. Dressing up means different things to different people but most women were in dresses.

The staff was amazing. Service was beyond what you could imagine.

There are tons of things to do in the hotel all day long. You could probably stay busy right in the hotel without ever going to visit the rest of the island. But, we did rent bikes and take a trip around the island, amazing. And we went shopping a bit and got some fudge.

My wife summed up our experience the best, “They treated me like a queen!” A trip to the hotel is a step back in time, a step everybody should take every few years.

First time at the Grand and with the Winsome Women's Retreat. What a wonderful experience.
Will be back to enjoy the Hotel and the Retreat again. There is nothing like the ambience of the Grand. The combination of the retreat and the hotel make for an exception stay. I would recommend the Grand Hotel and the Winsome Women's Retreat to one and all!

Room Tip: They are all different, how do you choose?

My husband and I travel from CA to stay at the Grand Hotel for the Somewhere in Time weekend. We have done so for the last 7 years. We usually stay several days before and several days after the event. It is a trip we look forward to every year. The hotel is gorgeous and packed with history. The grounds are exquisite. Take advantage of any tours or lectures being offered. The cost of the weekend is not cheap but if you add on the extra days (at a lower rate) it is well worth it. Remember the room comes with breakfast and dinner. The food is excellent with a full American breakfast and a five course dinner. Those two meals plus a snack during the day is all you need. Maybe you can add some fudge that you pick up downtown. For the Somewhere in Time weekend a Saturday buffet lunch is included which is phenomenal. The employees were polite, courteous and professional. Any requests we have made have been done so in a timely manner. The owner Dan Musser is a wonderful man and very warm, accommodating and concerned about all of his guests. We look forward to seeing and talking to him every year. The hotel is an easy walk from the ferry and they take care of your luggage from the time you step onto the ferry to travel to Mackinac Island. We were fortunate to get a lakeside room our first year and we request a lakeside every year since. Yes, it is more money but the view you have from the moment you get up in the morning is breathtaking. We love staying at the Grand Hotel and highly recommend it.

Lovely despite cold weather during Lilac Fest, 1st week of June, wearing winter coats to ferry over and withstand island temps, rain. Loved every hotel nook and cranny on our 3-day special at hotel. Almost missed one night (did miss dinner) due to reduced ferry crossings...wise to inquire. All other info was profuse and as wonderful as reviewed by others, tho the meal schedule gives one a feeling of hurry up and wait at massively attended meals. Otherwise charming. Now view it from lakeside home!

Room Tip: Extreme savings when you take advantage of specials. Regular rates high, very touristy on island as...
