The Grand Hotel is different from all other summer resorts. Because it is located on a small island and the ferry stops at night, all staff live on property or nearby.

That said, the Grand Hotel is a throw back in time: real silver plate utensils; embossed towels, sower curtains, etc.; colorfully uniformed staff; very friendly service; beautiful well taken care of public and sleeping rooms; and a restful break from the ordinary place,

Since everyone's life experiences are different and each person has different expectations, that IMHO explains the negative reviews.

So if you decide to experience this throw back in time, be open minded and enjoy the unusual and relaxing time.

My husband and I just returned from a lovely weekend at the Grand Hotel. Our room was beautiful, comfortable and had a wonderful view. We enjoyed being pampered at dinner and breakfast. The food is outstanding and the wait staff makes you feel like royalty. We highly recommend this experience.

Room tip: Rooms on the west give a nice view of the bridge. On the east, you get the sunrise and the golf course with the lake in the background. Inner rooms have only a view of the roof.

We went to the Island to see a Legacy 5 concert, a gospel quartet, on Sunday & Monday. The venue was perfect for this performance. Our concert and room at the Grand was included in our package at a great rate. The meals available for dinner and breakfast were 5 star quality. The room was very nice, with the four corner bed, plenty of space to relax, not that we spent much time in the room with all the other things to do and see. The carriage ride, which lasted 1 1/2 hours on the Island was the best $ 25 we spent, very informative on the history of the Island. The downtown area was an easy walk down hill. The Grand Hotel horse drawn carriage was an event we missed because of the timing to catch the ferry. The view from the long porch of the Grand was spectacular. The staff of the Grand was very impressive, polite, helpful and courteous. It was a Grand experience !!

My daughter and I just returned from our stay at The GRAND Hotel on Mackinac Island and it truly was GRAND in every way. Words really can't express such a beautiful hotel in such a beautiful location and how very special they make you feel from the moment you step onto the LONG porch with all those comfy white rocking chairs overlooking the beautiful grounds and Lake Michigan.
It gets 5 stars PLUS from us! And we are planning our trip back when it opens in the Spring.

Room tip: The corner suites or front rooms overlooking the Grounds and Lake are our favorites.

There is nothing like the Grand. Build in 1915 in 3 months out of local white pine, this monumental hotel has the reputation of being one of the only hotels on Mackinac Island to have been featured in not one, but two movies. "Somewhere in Time" fans still unite here in late October each year.
We went for the "Celebrate Michigan" weekend rate at the end of September. It was GRAND in every way, and worth the experience. Would I do it again? At this price, yes. At usual prices, no.
You only need some memories once. We stayed the night of Sept 29th. Included in the "Celebrate Michigan (half-price, I think) special was a reception (poorly planned to occur directly before dinner) and dinner. Beer and wine at the reception was included. Not so at dinner, where two glasses of merlot set me back $28! Whoops, now I know. It also included buffet breakfast the next day. It was a weekend to remember. As Mackinac Island always is.
Check out the photos!

Room tip: There is a rush on "Celebrate Michigan" rooms, so be sure to call early to get one at all. Call late, and you will have "backyard view."
