We booked on the special - stay one night and get 2nd night 1/2 off. Our kids, including a teenager loved and everyone was so delighted with the place that we asked to stay a 3rd night and the manager said we could get the 1/2 price special for the 3rd night. The rooms were really nicely decorated; bathrooms very nice; plenty of towels. When they do turndown service in the evening, they bring new towels which is really nice. The breakfast and dinners were excellent. Service a bit slow sometimes, but you really get to enjoy the experience. The kids loved the evening dancing. We felt like we were on a cruise. Excellent place for an extended family vacation and with the meals included it is really a good value.

Best thing is view - other than that I would not pay the $$$ to stay. Interiors looked very dated and some floors, walls even dirty. Spend the $10 to rock on the porch and then stay at a B&B......

My husband and I honeymooned at Grand Hotel 16 years ago. When we had to travel to the midwest with our family, we were glad for an excuse to return!
When we checked in, we were unexpectedly upgraded from a Class III to a Named Room. I was thrilled! The room was huge (we had 3 cots for the children brought in but we still had more than enough space!) with a breathtaking view of the straits. It was beautifully decorated. A bottle of wine and chocolate-covered cherries awaited us.
The hotel called the room to find out what time to expect us for dinner, which was a nice touch. The whole family loved fussing over getting dressed and heading down. My husband left instructions to have the roll-aways brought in while we were at dinner. When we got back to the room the cots were there, all turned down and ready for bed.
Dinner was delicious. The creamy onion soup some of the best soup we have ever had! My husband had duck, while I opted for the prime rib. Everything was impeccable. Service was not intrusive, but attentive.
After getting the kids settled (teenage daughter babysat), my husband and I went up to the Cupola for drinks. Service again was attentive, the pianist was excellent. It was a very enjoyable, relaxed evening.
Morning dawned, and we headed down to breakfast. We were seated in the small room at the end of the dining room. The privacy was wonderful. Our food was very good but service in this remote area was a tad lacking. It was the only flaw in an otherwise memorable stay.
Our children love Grand Hotel so much they want to return again next year! I can't wait to book it!

We were so looking forward to this trip, and I am sorry that it turned out to be such a disappointment. I had wonderful memories of the Grand Hotel from many years ago, and the one thing that still was wonderful was the view. After that, however, it was downhill. We made the mistake of booking a Category III room through the hotel's reservation system, and were promised a view of the water and a large room. Instead, a room at $810 per night got us a view of the parking lot where employees park their bikes, with some view of the water off to the side of the balcony. We could not enjoy it, because the balcony was covered with dead bugs. Worst of all was the service in the dining room. The food was OK, but service was sullen and arbitrary. We received one breakfast (stone cold) way after groups that had arrived twenty minutes after us. I love the island and Michigan, but we won't stay at the Grand again.

I went to the Island for a girls weekend with my Aunt and Cousin to relax and enjoy and be pampered. We stayed at a lovely hotel near the lake, not the Grand. We did want to have high tea and the Grand has this service (one of the few services they offer). We took a taxi, horse drawn carraige, to the hotel. The grounds are beautiful, really lovely we were charmed. This ended quickly when we got to the door and were immediately greated by a sunglass wearing, English impaired door man who was confused when we asked him where tea was served (and gave us the wrong directions). He also asked for $10 each to enter the hotel, a strange request. When we questioned as to why he told us that those were the rules and directed us (by pointing) to another person who would take our money.

When it was explained to us that if you are not a guest of the hotel you must pay a fee to be on the property, my Aunt made her way to the front desk. There she was told that we would pay the fee, $10 per person and it would be deducted from the bill when we had tea, upstairs.

We made our way upstairs for tea. Seated in a lovely room with amazing view we were approached by a gentleman who explained the service and price and options. Great, we ordered. As he walked away the woman from the front door came up to us "Didn't I tell you it was $30 for you to enter the hotel? And did you give me the money? No, you didn't" Slightly taken aback I directed her to my Aunt. The arguement over the money continued for about 5 minutes. We paid it.

Next came the manager of the room who asked if there was a problem. We explained what happend and confirmed that the $30 would be deducted. His response was "well it's $5 per person" Then his response was, no if you are not a guest it is not reduced.

Although the staff, who were lovely, plied us with sherry and smoked salmon tea sandwiches our conversation was about how insulted we felt to be there. The overall feeling was that it was less important to have happy clients and more important to collect the money. Too bad.

Afterwards we went to shop, told everything was open until 6pm. at 3:30pm all of the Shops were closed.

It was a very unGrand experience.

The Grand was lovely, as always--it has a great "feel" to it--as if it could be the early 1900's as you take a stroll on the porch. The grounds weren't as well maintained as they have been in the past (proabably due to the economy like everyone else). My husband wasn't thrilled with our "girly" room with flowery wall paper, etc...i thought it was nice--and very clean. My husband compared it to a cruise ship...small room...great lido deck...average food.

This is why it only gets 3 stars and an average rating is mainly because of the food. We are big foodies and this food was mostly flavorless and my husband had a downright terrible dish one night (poached fish--ZERO flavor!) The ambiance just wasn't there this year--next time we'll stay somewhere else and just go there for high tea one day.

The tea (and a slice of birthday cake we had) were our only real food highlights. The high tea was $25 and consisted of a plate of delicious mini sandwiches and an assortment of pastries--all well executed. The Birthday cake was fantastic--an added expense but the best dessert we had all week for dinner--it was white cake with a hint of lemon, whipped cream frosting with dark and strawberry white chocolate decor--fantastic.
