“easy walk and a great view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

We walked on part of the path that took you to a road where Fort Holmes is located. What you go for is the view which is quite spectacular. The fort is really nothing to look at and you wouldn't even know it was there. This is because, I believe, that it burned due to a flag pole being struck by lightning thus burning the fort. Not sure when this occurred. I believe someone said today that in the future they are going to do something with it so that it will be more than just for the view.

“What a view!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2014

We have walked up to the Fort Holmes site many times before and it is always enjoyable. This year, we went up there to watch the 4th of July fireworks which are set off from a barge off the school/Grand Hotel area. While waiting for the 10:30 p.m. start, we could see the fireworks across the lake on the mainland in Mackinaw City and Cheyboygan. Nice.

“Imagination”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2014

We took a side trip on our bikes to see Fort Holmes. There is not much there but the sight and imagination that it was once a fort was awesome and well worth the bike trip. The view at the top was also worth the trip

“Walk or bike to the highest spot on the island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

Not a must see, but for the advid hiker or biker, please make this happen. Take a picture of the family on top of the fort overlooking the water.

“Beautiful View”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014

An historic site at the very top of the island, nothing remains except for the earthen embankments constructed by the British during the war of 1812. It used to have an entrance with doors that gave a better impression of the fort, but they were recently removed. The view, however, it what you go for - one can easily see ~270 degrees of the surrounding geography.
