Owner description: During the War of 1812, the British constructed a small fort on the highest point of the island, to better protect Fort Mackinac. Originally named Fort George, it was renamed by the Americans, following their return in 1815. The Americans continued to man the outpost for a few years, but eventually abandoned it. In 1934 a reconstruction, carried out by the Works Progress Administration and based on original plans, was completed. It was replaced by the current version in 2015.

We rode our bikes up there which requires a lot of up hill riding. The hill by the cemetery is the most difficult. If you prefer, you can take the stairs just past skull cave to avoid some of the hills although you would have stairs to contend with. There's not much left of the fort. Infact, the reconstructed gate that was part of the sight is now gone. However the views of the lake and island are worth the visit. There are plaques discribing the history and geology of the area.

I lived on the Island for several years, and fort Holmes was one of my favorite haunts... It affords a 360 degree view of the Straits of Mackinac... Several nations fought for control of that spot, because of that strategic placement... I'd fight for it just for the view.

Defiantly, excellent view to the all island from this highest point. You can either rent bike to travel there or just hike. In both cases, if weather is good, this is very nice place to visit.

...but you have to see it. The rich history and vantage point are incredible. This is the highest point on the island. We took a carriage ride to the steps just to enjoy some leisure history along the way. My kids didn't appreciate what they were seeing; however, I would hike back to this structure every time I'm on the island.
