“1st time overnight with 2 small children”
Reviewed 21 July 2013

This was our first time staying overnight on the actual island (although I have been to Mackinac Island nearly every year since I was born). There was an AMAZING deal for this hotel and we jumped at the chance to stay for 2 nights. We were already going to be in the Upper Penninsula and decided to change our plans. We are so glad we did. We were traveling with our 4 and 5 year old daughters so we were nervous about a B&B type feel with kids, but it is a family friendly place and everything was great!

There are several buildings on the property and we were in The Guest House on the top floor with a "peekaboo" view of the harbor (4th floor with an elevator and EXCELLENT air conditioning in room 3404). I was fine with the view of St. Anne's steeple, a partial roof and partial bay view. The room is like a hotel as another reviewer stated, but decorated like a B&B. The building location was quiet and although the place was full, we did not hear other guests.

The room was very, very spacious with 2 queen beds and a sitting area with a table. There was also plenty of room to store large pieces of luggage and it did not clutter the room or get in the way. The room was not a suite, but like a deluxe hotel room. I will say that more pillows would be nice (only 2 per bed) and the bed was NOT very comfortable. The room looks like it was recently remodeled with new carpet, wallpaper, repainted furniture, and plenty of wall outlets. The room smelled pleasant and did not feel stuffy. The temps were in the 90's and we were nice and cold in our room!

The hotel staff was friendly. The breakfast was AMAZING for a free breakfast. They had fresh fruit, cereal choices, breads, bagels, and other pastries plus yogurt, granola, traditional "real" oatmeal (cooked in a giant crockpot), hard-boiled eggs, a varietly of juices, coffees, tea and milk. It was a lovely set up. We were thankful to have such a wide selection especially with the kids in tow. Breakfast was served from 7:30-9:30 and we were there each morning at about 9:20. There was plently of food left and some people stayed and ate until about 10:00.

The property is picturesque. There is no hotel restaurant or pool, but we were fine with that. It is far enough out of town to be peaceful, but close enough to walk everywhere. It is about 2 blocks down from the Fort on Main Street and a block from the Yacht Club. I gave it a 4 because of the hard beds and lack of extra pillows - However, I never asked for more pillows and maybe they would have brought some if I had asked. Consequently, I did ask for more towels and they kindly brought enough for a family of 10!

Oh, they have porters that take your luggage from the dock to the hotel and the hotel to the dock. It was nice to have our luggage already at the hotel by the time we walked there (we checked in early around 12:30 because our room was already ready and that was nice). We did take a horse taxi on our way out and felt is was reasonable for the 4 of us plus our luggage for around $10-$12 dollars total. If you are on the fence about this place I would say to just do it.

Room Tip: The Guest House is air conditioned and has an elevator. It is in the back and is quiet with less no...

We are glad to hear that we were your lodging choice for your first overnight on the island. Many people have your same concerns about their small children and a B&B type location. We welcome families, as you experienced.

This inn is a perfect place to stay on Mackinac Island. I have been here many times over the years and it is consistently clean, well-staffed, and the rooms are lovely. The breakfasts, included in the price of your stay, include more of a variety of fresh foods than you usually get at a hotel. The garden atrium is a nice place to look out on or sit for a break. The location of the inn is perfect, off the busy main street yet close to all the attractions, Mission Point, the Butterfly House and the histroic St. Anne's Church.

Room Tip: If you want to sit outside your room overlooking the garden atrium, ask for a first floor room in th...

There really are no bad places to stay on Mackinac Island. Each hotel and B&B has its own charm. My goal is to stay at every single one of them one year at a time. This year we wanted to be cost effective and chose to stay at Harbour View Inn. While it is less costly than some of the other hotels, it has just as much if not more to offer making it an excellent value! Our room was fairly large and the bed was excessively comfortable. The decor was charming and welcoming. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was tasty. There are plenty of common areas including a beautiful porch to sit and relax. It is a short walk to the dock and the "downtown" area and an even shorter bicycle ride. They even rent bicycles by the hour here so you can just grab it before you leave and return it when you get back. Great hotel!

Stayed there 2 nights July 2nd and 3rd 2013. They put us in the back house. It is a cloister of rooms that face a courtyard which is super hot and stuffy location! The patios are NOT private and stretch out to other peoples rooms who SMOKE! The bed blankets had HOLES in them and smelled like stinky feet. They only give you two smashed pillows and the beds are hard as a rock and feel like a board. The bathroom is part of your room!!! The sink area is Open to the bed area- like a MOTEL! No closets! Very very much MOTEL like. The front desk is NOT helpful and for some reason the carriage tax's don't wait one minute for you and leave if you are not out front and they will not come back! you can miss your dinner reservations if you depend on the carriage taxi to pick you up from this place. No wonder they had rooms available during the 4th of July weekend....:(

Room Tip: Do NOT stay in the carriage house/back house. You will hate it.

We stayed for one night at the Harbour View Inn. We were on the top floor of the guest house. We had a nice view of the harbor. The room was nice and large with two queen beds. I thought the rooms were especially nice. I have stayed at two other properties recently on the island and our room was much larger here.

The breakfast was more then enough with oatmeal, cold cereal, pastries, fruit, etc.

I especially enjoyed sitting on the front porch. Even though it was quite warm when we were there, we had a nice breeze and it was very relaxing.

Room Tip: Thought it was very quite in the guest house. Nice view of the harbor from the top floor.

A friend and I spent 3 wonderful days @Harbour View Inn on Mackinac Island this past June. We just so happened to be there at the peak of the wonderful Lilac Tree Season. The Island smelled like Sweet Perfume.
Our room was in the Guest House in the Back of the Main Property, overlooking the gorgeous gardens and the rooms were just redone in wonderful Fresh Garden Flower Motifs. We also had a wonderful breakfast each morning, just enough to get us up and out. The staff was most kind and helpful while we were there..first we were met at the dock by a young man who took our luggage to our room so that we might walk around the Island a bit. We stopped by the Pink Pony for an afternoon refresher and I left something there, the staff at the Harbour View dialed up the Pink Pony for me and the young man from there biked up to our Inn to return my item. Now that's service with beyond compare. This was our second trip to Mackinac Island and we love the Island and will be back again next year, samt time, same place...

We've stayed in several hotels on Mackinac Island over the years. I doubt we'd come back to this one. I don't have any particular complaint except for the awful bed. We had a top floor room in the Guest House building, which had a great view of the harbor. I'm not sure the rooms below us (which had balconies), did have the view. In any case, the building was prettily decorated and the room was large and clean. But that was possibly the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in, with the exception of my brother's sofabed, and the pillows were like rocks. Also, the shutters did almost nothing to darken the room, which is a problem in the middle of summer when it gets light around 5:00am. I've had that same problem of inadequate curtains in other hotels on Mackinac Island.
The staff were very friendly, as you expect on the island. All hotels are overpriced there, and perhaps this one was slightly less over priced than others. But it was missing the extra touch that fools you into thinking that maybe the price isn't so outrageous. Other hotels offer a small pool or a billards table in a game room or a large porch to sit on or cheese and crackers in the lobby or warm cookies or fudge at night. This one had none of those small touches. They did rent bikes at the going rate on the island, but they didn't have kids bikes so we went elsewhere.
The breakfast was totally ordinary and all cold - hard boiled eggs, yogurt, some small muffins, cereal, juice.
If you do go to the island, biking around the island makes it all worthwhile.

Room Tip: the top floor of the "guest house" building have fabulous views of the harbor
