“Great view from porch but overall too expensive for room”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2012

I booked 2 rooms and must say that the price was pretty high. The porch, lawn and view are unmatched on island (expect for Grand Hotel) but the room, food (vouchers) and comfort was pretty sparse.
For $240 per night, the room was small and uninsulated. I could hear kids, romantic adults throughout the hallway to room and in the room. It is a lovely historic site and well worth the stay but this comes at a painful premium. The pool restaurant (Ice House) has great food and a friendly college-aged staff. If you want the best view it is worth the price for the porch but I think next time I will try a bed and breakfast as it might be just as quaint but the price would match the value and I can find a view by the marina. The family that owns this inn has an extensive list of properties on the island but quantity doesn't always mean quality.

Room Tip: A queen is for 2 small adults. Try the king if you are an average or tall person.

If your coming for the service, don't stay here! When making reservations we requested a room with a lake front view, when we got here we were given a room so small in the corner of the 4th floor that you could honestly just get in the door, and even then you walked around the edge of the bed, which in itself probably is a violation of a fire code! We went back down to the front desk and asked for a room change, the front desk person said they would have to talk with their manager, she left the desk for 30 seconds, came back and said that there was nothing else. I requested to talk to the manager, she went to her office again and came back saying that the manager was busy now. I told her I would wait. Looking rather uncomfortable she said that she was "busy". I said that I wanted to talk with her and would wait. I could see that there was no way that the couwardly manager was going to come out so I asked for the name of her manager. Somone else named Nicole came out and gave us a key to another room. Still no view, but atleast we could actually get in the room. We called down again to ask if there was ANYTHING better available, we would pay ANY aadditional costs for an upgrade..No. Now the bell boy brought our bags and said that there were other rooms available. If your coming here for the view, try someone else!!!!

Room Tip: Don't reserve here!!

This is a great hotel to stay in on Mackinac. We stayed in the annex suite in the back with 6 people and it was perfect. Just a 5 minute walk to downtown and the ferry. Clean hotel and staff was nice. Would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the Island House for a bachelorette weekend with the girls. The best part of our stay was the complimentary breakfast and the location! It was very close to the main strip. We got around on bikes that we brought (remember to buy a license for your bike if you bring your own, you can purchase them from the ferry company.) in the future I would probably rent a bike on the island, it was a little bit of a hassle bringing our own.

The Island House brought our luggage to and from the ferry. The view from the hotel is amazing. It was a great relaxing stay, but I would probably recommend a trip like this for couples rather than a group of bachelorettes!

Room Tip: Stay on a lower level floor, the ceilings of the top floor are slanted in some spots and my friends...

My husband and I booked a 4th floor room and were very pleasantly surprised to find that we were upgraded to a 3rd floor with a view. Everyone there was very friendly and there was just a "laid" back feeling. We bought a bottle of wine from the bar and sat out on the adirondacks in front of the Hotel and people watched as well as enjoyed the view of the water. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is upon check-in they don't go over anything with you that is important like the Breakfast Buffet is only served to a certain time then you are out of luck. They give you a flyer (ours was faded because the printer was out of ink or the laser jet was below capacity) to read and rely on you to read all the info. I do plan to go back this coming Summer (2012) and I hope to see you there!

Room Tip: The floors are not far from each other so when they talk about flights of stairs..it really is not t...

I live in northern Michigan and have visited Mackinac Island several times. Sept 2011 was the first time we had stayed at the Island View Hotel. I would rank it as better than the more famous Grand Hotel. First, it is more conveniently located, especially if hills are an issue. Island View is close to parks, waterfront, downtown and carriage rides.
Not all the staff are imports. I feel badly that the only people of color on the island are basicly imported workers and black. It would be nice to have diversity in visitors too. Island View has a mixture of staff, and all are just wonderfully friendly and accomodating.
We had absolutely fabulous weather. The shops were getting ready to shut down for the winter, so there were tons of good bargains to be found. It was great walking weather too.
Best of all, this time of year on Mackinac is largely an adult time. I love kids and have taken my own to the Island, but it is a whole different atmosphere when just adults are strolling the avenues, on the carriage rides and eating in the restuarants! Less frantic, more relaxed, and certainly more quiet!
The Island View staff up graded my friends and us into a couples' suite. Two large bedrooms, two bathrooms, one w/jacuzzi, and a nice gathering room with microwve and mini fridge. Linens were premimum, decor attractive, suite clean!
It was a glorious, fun stay. I heartily recommend Island View Hotel in September!

Room Tip: We stayed in suite at the back side of the hotel over a lovely garden. The view of the lake was no...

Make sure when you make your reservation you add the buffet breakfast. They do have a pool but it is located in the back of the hotel and sorta hidden. They have amazing views and you need a room with a view here, worth the price. You can rent bicycles right by the hotel and the biking is great for all ages. You can rent horses also. When renting a horse you can also ask for a guide to go along, when we did there was no additional cost for the guide. You can also take a carriage ride around the Island. There are no cars on the Island. The path around the island is perfect for biking, level and smooth so easy ride for all. We find the food in town less than average. We only eat at The Island House and are very happy with their food. You can rent boats here too. On this property there is a hill on the front with relaxing chairs to just sit and enjoy the beautiful views...ahhh soooo nice. The first time we went I wondered if all the walking and no cars would be exhausting...was I wrong. It is great not to hear to see cars and the walking is just fine for all ages and bikes are available everywhere. ENJOY!

Room Tip: Must add buffet breakfast and also get a room with a view.
