We just left Mackinac Island a couple of days ago and really enjoyed our stay at the Island House. Even with cold, wet weather, we enjoyed our time on the island. We booked a room with a waterfront view and were not disappointed! Our room was on the third floor in one of the turrets of the hotel. We looked right out on the street below, the water and boats, and from the bathroom window we could see the fort on the hill. Our room was lovely and large enough to have a table and chairs, great for playing cards when the weather was yucky. We could hear sounds from other guests, but it wasn't a problem at all. We could also hear the clip clopping of horses hooves which was wonderful! The room above us spilled a lot of water somehow, which started to drip through the ceiling into our room, but we called the front desk and within moments a maintenance man was at the door and took care of things.

Our room rate also included breakfast in the 1852 Room, a very pretty room overlooking the water. It was a buffet with cereal, granola, yogurt, fruit, various beautiful muffins, breads and pastries, french toast, waffles, eggs, etc. We thought it was very nice and the service was amazing! You would barely finish the last bite of something and your dirty plate would be wisked away.

Main Street can be a little hectic at times so we were glad to be farther down on the street, a bit off the beaten path. We loved the location.

By the way, we ate at the Yankee Rebel Tavern for dinner and thought it was amazing! We also had fudge at both Ryba's and Joann's and we thought Joann's was the best.

We loved our cute fourth floor room. Unfortunately, we made the request for a marina view room too late, but our room was perfectly comfortable and met our needs. The only complaint about the room was that the shower curtain was set 6 inches inside the tub, allowing for a space only about 2 feet wide to shower. A curved shower rod would have helped quite a bit.

The breakfast each morning was very good with full breakfast offerings: eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits and gravy, waffles and french toast, coffee cakes, fresh fruit, and wide variety of drinks. Looking out at the marina at breakfast was beautiful!

The veranda is a wonderful place to relax, read, and people watch. By the way, previous reviews have mentioned the lack of privacy and undisturbed sleep in the first floor rooms off the veranda. The hotel is fixing this concern as it now closes that portion of the veranda from 10pm to 10am, allowing those rooms more privacy and peace.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at the Island House and we will be back!

I have to say I hold a little bias for this hotel as I have been staying there for years. My family visits the island once or twice a year and we typically stay at The Island House for every visit. On the rare occasion that we book last minute and they can’t accommodate us, we will stay elsewhere but have always gone back the next time. We love it so much that my husband and I were married on the island and had our reception in the 1852 Grill Room at the hotel, which by the way serves an absolutely wonderful breakfast buffet and even more wonderful dinners!

First things first…yes, the hotel is a little pricy for what you get. If you are expecting luxury accommodations because of the price you are paying, get that out of your mind. You are paying for the atmosphere, not the luxury of the hotel. This is the oldest hotel on the island. It was originally built in 1852, therefore, don’t expect the Ritz. However, it is still a very nice hotel and in my opinion, it even beats staying at the Grand Hotel where you will spend multiple times more than you will here. I’ve stayed in every kind of room offered at The Island House from the 4th floor traditional rooms to the suites, and I don’t have any complaints about any of them. Again, they’re not luxurious, but no complaints.

What you are paying for when you stay at The Island House is the chance to get up in the morning and have a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate while you rock in the rocking chairs on the veranda with the cool morning air gently breathing against your face. You pay for the chance to experience the quite ambiance of the island once the evening ferries have departed with the last visitors and hearing only the noise of the horse’s hooves as they clip clop down the street. You pay for the chance to go for a late evening stroll through downtown and over to the dimly lit boardwalk. You pay for the chance to sit back and enjoy a slower pace of life that none of us are accustomed to anymore. You pay for more than just your room, so remember to take that into consideration.

The Island House has been nothing but wonderful for the past 12 years I have been visiting. They have always been helpful, courteous, and go above and beyond to make your stay a great memory.

We felt very welcomed and completely relaxed as soon as we set foot on the massive front porch. Even though the Island House is very old, it has been very well maintained and the staff is top knotch! We had forgotten our cell phone charger and the young lady at the front desk offered to let us use her own! After walking, biking, hiking and site-seeing we were looking forward to settling into our room. Everything, from the carpeting to the linens and the coffee maker and water glasses (real glass!) made us feel so at ease. Buffet breakfast in the morning was delicious and the dining room staff were so friendly and ready to get us anything we required. We had dinner in the Ice House which is tucked away at the rear of the hotel, but should definitely be searched out - yummy food, personal and very friendly servers made it fun for the whole family.
We try to get to Mackinac Island every summer, but this is the first time we were able to spend the night. If we are able to stay again, it will be with the Island House!

Overall, it was an amazing experience staying in a vintage hotel in an island that keeps a lot of things original. Surely you can't expect the latest and greatest amenities like in newer hotels, but this hotel offers great deals of comfort. The location is GREAT! Close by the harbor, downtown, the rental bike shops, and many other tourist points in the island. The size of the room is acceptable, after all it is a vintage hotel from the era where people's sizes were considered smaller and thinner than today's standard. For us, we didn't have any problem sharing a king size bedroom in the room that fits the bed, an armoir, and a small sitting couch. The hotel's staff were very helpful and friendly, no doubt about it. We even had the opportunity to see a couple wedding events held at this hotel in 1 day! Didn't bother the little noise from the guests on the porch until 10pm, after all it is a vacation. If you prefer a quiet and 'boring' sleep, then by all mean just stay home and sleep in your own bed.
The price should be tolerable considering it's part of the effort to preserve a historic place. It's not like paying for typical franchise Motel 8. The most important thing is don't expect anything regular like your staying at typical hotels in general.

Island House has a great location right near downtown. I also loved the historic presence of the hotel. The staff was very nice and the breakfast was great. Unfortunately, the room was not up to par. There was mold in the bathroom and an apparent leak of some sort visible on the bedroom upper wall. These things need to be routinely inspected and serviced. I would not recommend this hotel based on the room condition.

This was a great hotel and is family friendly. You can be dressed up or casual. They have an indoor pool (nice if it rains), but it was a little cold in the pool and HOT in the hot tub. The hotel has two restaurants/bars and a LOVELY terrace if the weather is nice.

Perfect location and nice to have a hotel that takes your bags from the ferry to hotel and back.

I highly recommend to all.
