“Great way to see the island”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

I would strongly suggest this attraction!! Almost every year we visit Mackinac Island we take the carriage ride. It is relaxing and a great way to see many parts of the island. You can even do this on a cold and rainy day. Of course, it is not as enjoyable but it is an option for something to do. There are two parts to the tour and you can also purchase the tickets to the butterfly conservatory. Please understand the butterfly conservatory is out at Surrey Hill. It is not for the butterfly house in town behind St. Anne's church. This is a must on the list for the first time Mackinac island tourist.

“Cold day but good ride”
Reviewed 13 June 2014 via mobile

We were there on a cold windy day in June. I had no trouble with the staff, horses, equipment or the ride itinerary. The weather was cold, but the company can't control that. All in all it was an enjoyable experience.

“NOTHING like their website describes....”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

We went on this tour 5/8/14. Ignoring the cold and windy day, our senior travel group decided to go on the carriage ride anyway.
1. The driver made us stand and wait 15 min before getting on (though he was the next one scheduled to leave). Some of our seniors are slightly handicapped (which was evident), but that didn't seem to matter to him.
2. We asked if the microphone was working...he said "yes, it's brand new". Well, it didn't work at all! He had to keep turning around to talk to us and most of the people in the back rows couldn't hear anything.
3. Yes, they had blankets to cover you from the cold wind, but our row's was a small one. The guys on the end were freezing.
4. The driver was visiting so much with the front rows' ladies, that he kept forgetting to point out the sights or stop at them. (I specifically asked about Arch Rock, but he wouldn't stop.)
5. The Carriage Island Tour Website mentions you'll see the Surrey Hill Carriage Museum, then transfer later to a bigger carriage. We didn't do this. The sights you were SUPPOSED TO SEE were the Butterfly Conservatory (we found out it was closed till mid-May), Arch Rock and the Governor's Mansion. We didn't see these either. The driver would point one way or another and say "it's over that way".
6. Getting on and off the carriage itself presented a safety hazard. There are no handles to grab on to (the vinyl seat-backs are too slippery) and the side steps are way too narrow. We were not the only ones to have a problem with this. One man "fell off" the carriage as he was trying to step down when we got to the Grand Hotel. (The driver never even asked if he was ok!)

As I said, you can't do anything about the weather. But the tour itself was terrible. Most of the sights we did not see because they were still closed or the driver failed to point them out or stop so we could see them. Even though he said he had been doing to tours for years, he apparently knew very little about the island. I think he just wanted to finish the tour asap because it was so cold!

To be fair, some of our friends said they had been there 2-3 yrs before and it was a wonderful tour. On this day, it was NOT. It was a total waste of time and money.

“What a way to travel.”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

The whole Island is a wonderful day trip. Food, transport, hiking, the old fort, views, biking, and a beautiful hotel that I wish I could have afforded to stay at. The ferry ride over is refreshing and even better on the way back, especially if you make a side trip under the Mackinaw Bridge.

“Great Way to Kick Off Your Stay on the Island”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

I found this to be a great way to start a day trip on the island. We bought a package from the Star Line Ferry Company which included a round-trip ferry ride from Saint Ignace, the carriage tour, and entrance into Fort Mackinac. At this time, it was a savings of nine dollars.

Regardless of where you get the tickets, this was a good way to see s part of the island. You get to ride a horse drawn carriage while getting a tour from the drivers. I particularly enjoyed the history, especially on the second part of the tour through the state park. On that portion of the ride the driver was enthusiastic, sweet, filled with energy, and just a pleasure to be with. She certainly lifted the spirits of everyone on board and seemed to really enjoy what she was doing.

The tour takes you to Surrey Hill, where you can see old carriages and visit a butterfly garden. (I did not visit the garden) You then board another carriage to go through the state park... with a quick stop at Arch Rock before stopping at the Fort... where you have an option to get off.

Again, I really enjoyed the tour and would do it again if I return. The only disappointment was the short time we had to spend at Arch Rock... but that's another reason to return. I recommend this tour to get your bearings on the island and learn a little about the history.

Note: The carriage portion of the two is about 1 hour 45 minutes... but a part of that is left up to you depending on how much time you spend on Surrey Hill... or visit the fort.
