When we visited the island for the first time in June our big decision was whether or not to stay at the iconic Grand Hotel. After reading multiple reviews we decided on the Lake View and were generally pleased with our choice.
The Lake View is conveniently located near the Shepler's ferry and your luggage is taken to and from the hotel for you. It is located right along the many shops on the main street. This could be considered a convenient location but it can be congested and even a little noisy in the late evening.
The room we had was nicely decorated. The bathroom was a little on the small side. The property has an indoor pool which was the big draw for us since we had 2 school age kids with us. The pool was moderate to cool temperature but good size and nice surrounding area( it essentially sits in the middle of the hotel with rooms rising up on all 4 sides. The "free breakfast" consists of one of those pseudo waffles you put in a toaster and should be eliminated or upgraded as it is really an embarrassing offering. Overall this hotel is a nice choice and competitive with other properties we saw.
We did visit The Grand Hotel and paid the $10 fee to set foot on the property. When I checked prices we could have stayed in a small room at this hotel for just about the same as what it cost for a bigger turret room at the Lake View. The hotel's main advantage as I saw it is that it is set off far away from the crowded streets packed with tourists. You have a pretty view of the water and gardens and just a much more country feel. The snooty factor is quite high and based on other high end properties where I have stayed it looked like it would be in the middle of the pack in terms of decorating, views, etc. having to dress up each night for dinner would not be appealing to me. This place seems most suited to honeymooners who might want the chance to dance and wear their best finery. The one outstanding feature was the pool which is huge, famous and beautiful. I had called about the pool temp and decided not to risk it being warm enough to go in this outdoor pool. However, when we visited the property it felt perfectly warm. You can, for a fee, use the pool with a day pass even if you are notnstaying atbthe hotel. Keep in mind that The Grand is a bit of a hike down to the shops although I think the hotel may provide horse drawn carriage transportation.
We ate lunch at The Iroquois and it looked very nice and had the advantage of being right on the water with a lovely view while still being very close to the shops.
In terms of time on the island we thought 2 nights was just right. The shops
S take no more than a day. The bike ride around the island takes a couple hours. It is very nice but if you bike anywhere but the perimeter of the island you either hit heavy bike traffic or get into some seriously steep hills. The fort was very well done and we enjoyed several hours there. A horse drawn carriage ride to tour the island is also a nice way to pass an hour or so.
One final note...we had considered taking our elderly parents with us but were concerned about the handicap accessibility of the island. Our parents can walk moderate distances but have trouble with steps and the like. I do not think this island is well suited to those with limitations, especially if traveling without help. When you return to Mackinac City you have to tote your luggage to your car which can be a distance. Much of the inner island has very steep hills. The fort has a lot of steps. There was a handicap accessible carriage but it still looked to me like it would be hard to step into. Since we did not actually travel with our parents I cannot say for sure but I would be leery about this destination.
