“Probably Excellent if weather had been better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2013

The Inn at Stonecliffe is a huge mansion home from the 1930's converted into large NON Air-conditioned guest rooms. With the 95 degree days - it required every window to be opened and all the fans on full to get to sleep. TV is very small, and huge bathroom has "quaint" and old fixtures - which had a bit of a problem either holding or draining water. That said, the place has a real romantic feel to it - actually gorgeous in so many ways - the back porch is right out of Gatsby. Breakfast was varied, good food and fresh, and the service staff exceptional - friendly and professional.
Do note it is right off the runway for the island airport - and there is a fair number of private planes going in and out through the day - but not at night. If you are a pilot this is a real gem of a place to stay.
Being away from town was a real benefit to having a quiet and personal vacation.
We will be back for a fall weekend - but this time we will make our reservations months in advance to try out the new addition - which is air conditioned.

Room Tip: For romance - if the weather is normal - not hot - try the main building. For comfort stay next door...

My husband and I just spent 2 nights and 3 days at the Inn at Stonecliffe. I think this is the best hidden gem on Mackinac Island. It is a little bit off the beaten path, but it is by far the most magical place on the island. It is tucked away about 1.6 miles inward and away from the noisy, and extremely crowded downtown. When we arrived we felt like we were in on our little magical fairytale. The grounds are beautiful and inside it is quaint and welcoming. The staff was amazing and the free breakfast you get along with staying there was FABULOUS. It's not your typical cold pastries and dry cereals. They had a hudge buffet of warm items such as eggs, sausage, buscuits and gravy, a large fruit platter, yogurts, muffins and more. We stayed in the "Straights" and the room was the size of a small appartment! It was huge. I was a tad bit dissapointed with the upkeep of the bathrooms. They could do a better job of cleaning and maintaining the bathrooms in the rooms, but other than that, the room was great. We were nervous that there is no air conditioning on the main property where we stayed, but air conditioning wasn't needed at all. In fact, we were cold one night! (We stayed in JULY) The back patio area at the Inn at Stonecliffe has the absolute best view of the Mackinac Bridge. They also have wonderful sitting areas where you can relax and watch the sunset. We visited the Grand Hotel while we were there just to say we went inside... and The Inn at StoneCliffe is WAY better than that place. The Grand is nothing but stuffy, pretentious and old. I would never stay there... especially for the price they wanted per night. If you are looking for a fabulous and magical place to stay in Mackinac Island, Inn at Stonecliffe is where you need to be.

Room Tip: The "Straights" room is HUGE!

I went there for dinner with another couple. The setting is beautiful, gorgeous view of the Straits and the Mackinaw bridge. My dinner was excellent. Crab cakes and caesar salad. Very attentive service. Looking forward to going back one more time this summer. Beautiful evening.

We stayed at the the Stonecliffe in June of this year. Some friends of ours told us about the mansion, and they said it was a nice romantic getaway. They were certainly right! There's a big mansion, as well as a regular hotel part. We stayed in the mansion! It reminded me of an scene where an Agatha Christie mystery could take place. Supposedly it's about one hundred years old, but the rooms are very clean, and they have WiFi. All of the staff very helpful, and they seemed like a lot of fun. It takes about 20-25 minutes to get there by carriage ride, but it's well worth it. They also have THEE BEST view of the Mackinac Bridge at night. -Very romantic.

Room Tip: Stay in the mansion! I liked the old time feel. We didn't order any room service.

I recently stayed at the Stone Cliff Inn for a week but only wish I could have stayed longer.

The Inn is situated about a 20 minute buggy ride away from the hustle and bustle of main street. I so enjoyed the peaceful quieter setting than down town. Shuttle service is prompt hourly.

Breakfast is taken in a very pleasant room overlooking a simply stunning back garden or you may enjoy it on the patio.

The room was clean, well aired and comfortable. The staff were also very friendly to me at all times.

The nearby trails in surrounding woods are beautiful and skirted with all kind of wild flowers and the occasional glimpses of the lake were just breath taking.

It was an allover pleasant experience and hope to return some day.

The inn is situated on beautiful acreage in a quiet area of the island. It is a very nice respite from the crowds of the village. Although we had to ask for more bath soap ,house-keeping didn't empty the trash from the previous guests and a light-bulb needed to be replaced, the front desk was very apologetic and responded quickly to our concerns. Our room, the Woodcastle in the manor, was spacious, quiet and offered a lovely view of the grounds of the estate. We enjoyed cocktails on the veranda in the afternoon. Dining at the Inn was okay. Breakfast and dinner entrees were generous but not outstanding cuisine. We chose to rent the one-gear bikes for the day instead of carriage rides. The carriage rides were very nice but just too slow. We were able to cover alot of ground on the bikes without the inconvenience of stepping in the landmines left behind by the horses. I would suggest walking out to watch the dramatic sunset over Lake Huron...either at the vista on the premises or from the golf course. For the best view in town for lunch...eat on the outdoor veranda at Fort MackinacTea Room. The Grand Hotel, I believe, runs the kitchen. For dinner, an excellent restaurant and view is the Carriage House at the Iroquois Hotel.

Room Tip: The Woodcastle Room in the manor is very spacious and has a lovely view of the estate.

This was our first stay here, although we have been to Mackinac Island many times; we will definitely be back. Staying on the bluffs was so relaxing, with a beautiful view of the water and equally beautiful grounds. Our room was in the Summer House, with two Queen beds, a sitting room with sofa sleeper, "comfy chair," microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, and small balcony with table & 2 chairs. There was also Internet access and a television. The breakfast included hot and cold items, plenty to get you started for a full day of relaxing, swimming in the pool or heading into town. The carriage ride is a relaxing 30 minutes, with return trips on the hour. We had two dinners here, and both were delicious. They offer a $35 dinner which other diners seemed to enjoy, including an amuse bouche, soup, salad, entree and dessert. We ordered from the ala carte menu. The whitefish was delicious, as was the creme brulee. The second night I had a chicken Caesar salad, also delicious. The staff, especially the dining room staff, were all friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
Right next door is a Grand Hotel restaurant, Woods, for anyone looking for a little more variety. We didn't eat there but purchased box lunches for our bike ride around the island.
