“Low-key and comfortable”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

We stayed here overnight before going over to Mackinac Island for the rest of the weekend. The Beachcomber isn't fancy but it was very clean and quiet with a comfortable bed. Friendly check-in staff and we appreciated the larger than usual parking spaces. The only negative would be the tiny shower. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again the next time we're in Mackinaw City.

Pleasant stay. Very close to Mackinac Island ferries. Clean rooms. Friendly, helpful staff. No crazy hustle and bustle like the hotels less than a mile away. I would stay here again, and I would recommend friends to stay here, the rates are much more reasonable then the hotels just around the corner also.

We initially had booked a room at the Clarion down the road but when we saw the ultra positive TripAdvisor reviews on the Beachcomber, we switched and didn't regret it.

It was a late Spring so the apparently annual gnats (small flies) were swarming everywhere and their dead bodies would pile up regularly inside and outside. They don't bite, they're just a nuisance. I would imagine some people would be totally grossed out by this in which case, you probably shouldn't visit this area in the spring (or if it was a long winter, then don't come in early June!). It was also a bit chilly and damp so my expectations of strolling down the beach barefoot and grilling steak on the hotel bbq (also on the beach), were not realized but none of these factors are the Beachcomber's fault!

We had one of the beachfront rooms (2nd floor) overlooking the lake and bridge. The furnishings and decor were 80's/90's but it was clean and comfortable. There was a small round table with chairs for eating and a small fridge/freezer which was handy. There was no microwave which was ok in that we could use the microwave at the office, but it still would be nice to have one in the suite just to heat things up when the office is closed or if you don't feel like going out.

There's a self-serve breakfast in the office; just your basic items: dry cereal/milk, orange juice, instant oatmeal, bagels/english muffins, cream cheese, butter, jams. They provide trays to take your breakfast back to your room (there are no breakfast tables in the office).

The staff are friendly, helpful, and informative about local attractions etc.

It's too bad about the cool weather/gnats. I think this hotel review would have been more raving if they had a warm early June.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money (which I think was maybe $10 more for two queens) to get a lakefront room.

This was our third time at the Beachcomber in the past three years. The people who own and manage it are fantastic. If you need information, you get it. We've never been disappointed and got better accomodations, a better room, a better view and better service than at the grand traverse resort. We love the homey feel of the Beachcomber and the location couldnt be more perfect. Walking distance to downtown and quiet nights beachfront with a bonfire make our stays there ideal. We're planning on coming back to the Beachcomber for years to come! Jeff and Sherri.

We stayed the first week in June/2014 for our honeymoon. We reserved online and the process went smooth. Quick replies. We weren't going to make our check in time that we stated in the online reservation so we called and verified we were coming. They told us how far out we were and we were welcomed when we arrived. Check in went smooth. They gave us coupons, a pile of things to do and see and were very helpful in telling us what was in the area etc.

We paid $59 through the week and than the rate went up to $69 for Friday. No big deal to us. It is to be expected.

Our room was 2 queens on the second floor with a balcony. Very nice view of the lake and the Mackinaw Bridge.

Room was very well kept and they cleaned it everyday. They also cleaned our balcony for us. Fridge in room also.

Breakfast is light. Bagels, cereal, coffee, OJ and Milk. I'm sure there are a few more things I'm forgetting. Enough to get us off to a good start to the day. They also sell some soda, water and snacks.

My wife talked to a gentleman(Owner I believe) and he was very helpful in answering any questions about what to see, where to go, how to get there etc.

This is a very well kept Ma and Pop type of place with great rates, service and rooms. It has been owned by the same people for 26 years. That says a lot about them and the customer service.

We have no regret in our choice and when we return, we will stay again.

Overall it was a great experience. We didn't need the pool, big breakfast etc. as we were gone from sun up to sun down.

Stay with the Beachcomber, you won't regret it!

This is a great and inexpensive place to stay. The location is quiet, the rooms are clean and the owner is very friendly and helpful. We have stayed in many hotels in Mackinaw City over the years and this is where we will be staying in the future.

This motel has nice reviews and we were looking forward to trying it out.... However after "reserving" a room on the hotel's own website we were later informed the lakefront 2 queen bed room we had "reserved" was not available and we were offered a courtside room with a single queen.... Now what bothers me is that after you enter the dates you would like to stay...the website page takes you to a list of room options based on the dates you selected for your stay...After you choose the room type you would like...you are then REQUIRED to enter your credit card information... including the exp date and the 3 digit security code... I've done this before on other hotel websites but I've always actually gotten the room I was reserving. -But evidently with this place...they make you THINK the room is available during the dates you enter...but it may NOT be....That alone wouldn't bother me...but the fact that they require you to enter your credit card info. including the security code is VERY DISTURBING to me... If it is intended to only be an "inquiry" as to whether they have your room choice on the dates you select then you should NOT have to enter your credit card and security code just to have them turn you down... I would never had entered that personal info. onto any website if I had felt it was just for an "inquiry"..... I'm pretty sure the buttons I clicked on said "reserve now" and "make reservation"... not "inquire" about availability...

The Beachcomber Motel would like to apologize for any inconvenience you encountered with your online reservation. We would also like to assure you that at no time was your personal information vulnerable. As we accept or reject reservation requests, the only information visible to us is the last four digits of your card and expiration date.

Our establishment is a small motel, and our online reservation system is not directly on our website but is hosted by a third party in conjunction with our official Mackinaw City Visitors Bureau. Due to our small inventory of lakefront rooms, availability can change on a moment’s notice as reservations are also taken directly over the telephone.

Again, we are sorry that you were unable to book the room of your choice for your planned stay. We would love to be able to accommodate any future request you may have, and you are always welcome to contact us directly by telephone to make your travel arrangements.
