Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground

We returned to Mill Creek for the third time last week and still enjoy our visit. We have graduated from a pop-up camper to a trailer and the folks at the campground did a really good job in setting us up with a Bridge/Island view between posts 10 & 13. The fit was a little tight as we were not able to open our canopy but that was not a problem since we were able to sit out in front of our camper around a fire and just enjoy the beauty of the bridge.

By the way....thanks for getting rid of those awful "pans" that we had to use in previous visits for fires. The fire ring that was at our site was very useful and it looked like the campground was constructing newer fire pits throughout the campground.

We experienced cooler weather during our visit so we were able to open up the camper windows and sleeping was great as you could hear the waves crashing on shore.

We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon so the check-in process was quick and painless. The camp store had the supplies that we needed and it was an easy bike ride from our campsite.

This place is huge! You could easily get lost while riding but keep pedaling and you will find where you are going.

The only complaint was the trash bins at the entrance/exit. It was very congested getting out. I understand the need to consolidate the trash in one area to help control the "critters", but with as much space that is available in the campground, maybe an easier access could be designed.

Overall, we will be back again in a couple years.

Campsites are WAY overpriced..... Disgusting waterfront. It's mud, muck, slimy, slippery, plain nasty. Yes, you can see the bridge, which is exquisite, but other than that, there is no use for the water access. The pool is less than average, and WAY overpopulated. For a campground with 600 sites, the pool should accommodate way more people than it does. Kids are diving, jumping, acting ridiculous, and it makes it hard when everyone is so jam packed in, that they are bumping into each other. Also pool hours are ridiculous for a family campground in the summer time. You HAVE to use their firewood, which is green, and doesn't even burn. Our children couldn't even make s'mores. I would NOT recommend this campground. Take your hard earned money to a place that makes your stay worthwhile.

Yes, you can not bring firewood into the park. Did you not see the billboards running the length of the state or read the news for the past 10 years? Moving firewood in Michigan is banned? Entire forests are being decimated by the Emerald Ash Borer as well as a host of other pests. We sell local (pest free) aged wood at the store and camp office, it is not green. We are hoping to keep our large stand of ash trees intact for as long as possible. Though now there are even huge swaths of the Upper Peninsula that have been infested. There is usually a large selection of wood at both locations and I don't notice anyone having a problem making a fire, but if you did, don't be embarrassed, you could have called the office and we would have helped you start your fire. We can do that because we have staff on call 24/7, maintaining the park, assisting campers and generally running their tails off. A review like this would make you wonder how we have been in business for 50 years, why 40% of our business is return customers and 30% is by word of mouth. I am beginning to think either people "get it" and love our place, or they just don't. And if you don't "get it" I don't think a bigger swimming pool would make you happy. We clean our buildings continuously all day as well as pick up and maintain the park constantly. We have over 21 types of sites to pick from along with beautiful knotty wood pine cabins. We give free hayrides and firetruck rides in the evenings. We have miles of roads to explore, hike and bike. We have a well stocked park store and an arcade. This is one of the most spectacular settings of most any campground - anywhere. We have one mile of natural beaches with views of the Mackinac Bridge and Mackinac Island. As everywhere in Lake Huron, the water levels are down, so everyone's beachfront has been changed. Where you are along our beach varies greatly between crystal clear rocky beach, some places with natural silt (that comes and goes), and a small sandy area. I swim in this lake twice a week and I assure you the water is crystal clear and gorgeous, just like in our photos and videos. The bottom in most places along our shore is rocky, so water shoes make it much more pleasant experience if you venture out. As far as wasting your money? We have supersaver rates at the time you stayed that are $12 a night on up to full hookup sites on the lake with a bridge view (no other campground anywhere has lakefront bridgeview sites) for $49 a night - not to mention everything in between. I don't know any other campground with that range of rates and choices - let alone rates as low as ours. We just (last Friday) completed a full rebuild of our entire wifi (available FREE to our guests) network to increase speeds and dependability - we are constantly, daily, working to give our campers the best possible camping value.

Every year, my extended family goes on a family reunion camping trip. It's a LARGE group, usually needing to book 12-15 sites. We had a pretty great experience here. We stayed 5 days.

I read a few of the reviews complaining about the staff being rude. NEVER HAD ONE BAD EXPERIENCE WITH STAFF. Like I said, we're a large group and they had to come and tell us to quiet down one evening (oops! :) ) but even then, they were polite and smiling the whole time. The store staff and check in staff were great as well!

The facilities were nice. The bathrooms were always clean. The shower stalls are created by curtains with no actual door or walls between showers, and that I didn't really like, but it was again clean and because they were gender separated, it wasn't too bad.

The pool was great. A little chilly, but the kids loved it. It was always clean and the pool had plenty of seating around it. The only negative about the pool area was that it wasn't very accessible for young children or anyone with a physical disability. The only way in or out of the pool is by pool ladders. Not bad getting in, but can be terrible getting out if you have a bad knee or are pregnant. I wish they had steps or something to make it easier because a few members of our group couldn't enjoy the pool because they knew they couldn't get back out.

The camp store was really well stocked. The kids really liked the ice cream they had, and the morning coffee was really nice :) The prices weren't bad either.

The cabins were nice and clean. We've stayed in cabins every year for the last 15 years and these ones had great storage space. It made it easier to keep it organized during our stay.

The views are just as spectacular as all the reviews say! It's a lovely campground (VERY LARGE, so I recommend a bike) and the people there really were wonderful. I would stay here again for sure. It was a really enjoyable trip.

We have stayed here a few times over the years, it's a nice campground for being such a large one. We did not have a reservation (August 4th) and campers were backed up to the road waiting to get in when we got there so I wasn't expecting to get a site. The driver has to stay with the vehicle during check-in (to be able to keep moving your unit forward) so I had to walk up to the office to see about a site. There are several windows so I waited for one to open up. I was surprised they could accommodate us, with a water view site no less. :) We wanted electricity and water so it was $40 (the most we'd paid all week while we were touring the U.P.). I loved how the owners have planted trees between each site, giving a much more private feeling that way.

We have been spoiled by owning our own piece of property in northern Michigan and that is where we camp most often, usually only hearing the wind blowing through the trees and birds. I was prepared for noise at Mill Creek though, since it is so large and many families with children camping. The only noise issue we had was that we were directly across from the small beach area and there were 4 young teenage boys playing frisbee over there. No problem with that...until...one boy backed his car up onto the beach, opened the trunk and doors and turned his "music" on...LOUD. :( We tried ignoring it, but that was impossible. Then, the neighbors on our left apparantly decided they didn't like the "music" the young boys were playing, so they turned THEIR music on as well. So on one side of us we were hearing their music, and hearing the music on the beach as well. Not enjoyable at all. Of course it's during the day so we didn't complain, but decided to get up and go for a walk around the campground to get away from it and stopped at the store for a bundle of firewood. When we got back the car at the beach had been moved to a proper parking spot, and the music had stopped. Not sure if campground security made them stop, or if they did it on their own, but we were thankful it stopped. I never understand why people think they need to play their music so loud. If it's loud enough for the campers beside you to hear it, it's too loud. Not everyone enjoys the same music, use your earbuds/headphones.

We enjoyed a nice evening campfire, and another stroll around the campground and stopped at the open area by the bridge view so we could watch the lights come on the bridge. There are benches all along the area, nice so we didn't have to lug our chairs all the way down there.

Restrooms were clean, but it would be nice to have a hand sanitizer dispenser in the "rustic" bathrooms.

Too many "rules" for the wireless internet so we didn't bother getting a code to be able to use it. We found wifi service in every campground we stayed at to be spotty at best. We just chose to use the internet through our phones instead.

Night time noise was not an issue, and I was surprised since it's such a large campground with so many people camping. People quieted right down and we got a good night's sleep.

We actually set our alarm clock to get up and watch the sunrise over the water, as it was my birthday. :) What a beautiful way to start our day. :)

Would definitely stay here again, but would make a reservation next time in order to get the site we wanted. It is a very popular place!

We reserved a larger site (40 x 60) and were happy with our experience. We were sleeping in a 28 foot trailer and the site was plenty big with plenty of space for our family to spread out. Our site had a picnic table and fire ring. We were able to see Lake Huron from our site and a quick walk led us to the beach, where they have fire rings set up so you can have an evening fire and look at the Mackinaw Bridge lit up at night. They have a very good variety of sites, from smaller tent sites and rv sites to the 40 x 60... so people have a variety of options open to them. If people thought their campsite was too small, they could have reserved a bigger site like we did. The staff was very helpful and honest when we called, letting us know that some people thought the smaller sites were too small and close together for their taste, which is why we went with a bigger site. They also have lots of things to do there, from the beach, to a heated pool, playgrounds, basketball, and firetruck and hay rides. Also, staff were constantly cleaning bathrooms, picking up any trash, ashes etc. so showers and grounds were VERY well kept. We couldn't' have asked for better!

We have stayed here twice in the last year. The most recent time we had family come with us. Our group had a cabin, large RV site and a tent site. We were all very pleased with our accommodations. The wifi was not consistent at all. We do like the trees between the sites for extra privacy. The open grassy area by the water is a great place to relax and see the bridge or look at the stars. We will be back next summer.

So happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. It is a challenge maintaining wifi over a 200 acre park and yes, our wifi has been giving us problems all summer (and some of last summer). We have had to ask campers on some days to use the units by our Store or Office because of outages in the park. As of today, we finally got the engineer from the firm that operates our system here on site and he is redoing the entire system with more resilient radios and adding an additional 100 MB/Sec leg to the two others we already have. He seems to think it will do the trick and we hope if you come and see us again that it will be a dependable and satisfying experience. As of today we also found out that apparently there was a flaw in some of our nearly new wifi radios that let them leak water. So that means we have a lot of room for improvement here. At this point I am hoping it is all in order by this Friday as planned.

We had a wonderful time at the Mackinaw Mill Creek campgrounds! I had a picture in my mind of what the cabin and the camping experience would be like here and this place far exceeded those expectations! We reserved a large cabin with a bathroom and wouldn't change a single thing about it. The cabin was extremely clean and well appointed. We had to bring our own sheets, cooking supplies, etc., but that was fine by me and we were prepared. The front of the cabin had a large kitchen/bed area, with a separate bath and separate second bedroom. The bath was large, the shower a bit small for my 6'5" husband, but no complaints here. Plenty of hot water! The second bedroom consisted of queen sized bunk beds which our girls loved! The room also had plenty of nooks and cubbies for all of their clothes, boots, books, etc. The beds had your basic camp mattress, so bring an extra mattress pad if you need it. The kitchen had plenty of cupboards and everything we brought could be stashed away in the cabinet space. The refrigerator worked great! There was plenty of counter space and the large indoor picnic table which seats 8 was a welcome break from the outdoor weather for playing games and eating. The cabin also had a small heater which was perfect for warming up the chilly morning air. The surrounding campsites and grounds were well mowed and landscaped. You could see the pride the owners have in this campground in how well they have maintained the beauty of the lakeside and surrounding areas. I also could tell how many new trees have been planted so that in the future, the campsites will have even more privacy. We appreciated the owners spraying the gravel roads to keep the dust down as well. We had a nice fire ring for cooking outdoors and the large front deck of the cabin was a great place to store our extra gear and our sandy shoes. We only had to walk a short time to hit the lakeshore. It was beautiful, with stunning views of the Mackinac Bridge. Our girls enjoyed the evening hayride and fire truck rides as well as the pool. My husband hit up the store for an evening pizza and it was a bargain. He also picked up some simple groceries until we could hit the stores in the city. Our friends who brought their camper with them were kindly located next to our cabin so we were within a stone's throw away from each other. Their campsite was large with much open space on either side. There was a nice playground for the children and the beach area was beautiful. While driving through the campsite you could see all different modes of camping -tent, RV, trailer, etc. Those expecting perfection will not find it as you are camping. Be advised, you will get what you pay for with regards to the size of your site and the amenities provided. We were willing to pay a bit more to have additional space. That might not be an option for some, but if possible, try to extend your budget to include a bigger lot size. We didn't care if our cabin was located lakeside because it is an easy walk to get there. Our family had a wonderful experience and would come back to this exact spot and campsite again if the opportunity arises, which I certainly hope it does!!

Room Tip: We were in cabin 729. One row down from the lakeside cabins. It was less than 5 minutes from the s...
