“Great hotel!”
Reviewed 10 July 2007

Just outside of the shops of Mackinaw City is this lovely, quiet, Hampton Inn. Hampton Inns have every reason to be proud of the improvements they have made with their new comfortable beds, pillows and bedding. The shopping area of Mackinaw City was within walking distance. The management was ready for our group upon arrival and baggage handling was quick and efficient.

Booked through Hilton's web site 2 months in advance at a good rate for a holiday weekend. When we got there, they wouldn't honor our confirmed reservation, even though we had a copy . Told us we could stay one night for $35 more than we reserved, but they were booked up for the second night so we were out of luck. The assistant manager and manager were no help at all, and even became advisarial when I called Hilton's customer service dept to see if they would help. Hilton wouldn't do anything because it was an independent franchise. We talked to other hotels in the area the next day to try to book a room, and found out this is a common practice at the Hampton Inn.

Probably a good thing we were only there one night. The breakfast area was filthy, there was mold in the bathroom and the rooms had a musty smell. The back door to the hotel does not lock so there is essentially no security at this hotel . That back door is also the "smoking area" and in order to go in and out, you have to walk through the haze and stench of smoke and cigarette butts all over the ground.

The one positive was the bed. It was a HIlton bed which are always nice. I'm a silver award Hilton Honors member and very loyal to the chain, but Hilton should cut this one loose.

We have stayed in Mackinaw City before and made the mistake of staying here Aug. 19. The hotel is very small and cramped in its location. Rooms have double beds not queens. The pool was frigid at best and was un-usable. It also is about the size of a small room. Was told they had fixed the heat even though the pool heater seen thru a glass window was un-assembled. Front desk could have cared less. Asked to speak with manager and was told he was an hour away. Asked to be called on my cell by the manager and received a generic email two weeks later. Breakfast was cold and cramped. Pour girl was over-worked trying to keep up. This place is nothing like the Doubletree and other Hampton inns we have stayed. Would never make this mistake again. Should have read the reviews here before.

  • Liked — The beds were comfy but small.
  • Disliked — The pool and staff
  • Tips/Secrets — Better hotels in area for same price.

This hotel is not on the waterfront, it is accross Huron road opposite the ferry docks. The indoor pool is in a seperate building and although the beds are wonderful, they are all double beds, according to the manager I talked to regarding this matter. We had to wait half an hour (we checked in at 4 pm) for our room to become available. The staff was not very knowledgeable - I asked them to confirm a booking on their system at another Hilton group hotel and they did not know how to do that. The much touted hot breakfast ran out of coffee and eggs and hot chocolate - took them almost 15 min to at least provide some coffee again. Our complimentary hand lotion was half used - not that we use it in any case, but just makes one wonder. The bathroom floor had coffee stains on it that was cleaned the next day. Not quite what one expects from a hotel in the Hilton group.

Our family stayed here one night while visiting Mackinac Island. Nothing was fancy, but we were pleased with the hotel overall. The room was clean and roomy. The included breakfast was nice and convenient. One complaint was the pool is in a separate building not connected to the hotel and it was not very big or appealing. The front desk personnel were helpful.

My wife and I stayed at this property for two nights over Memorial Day weekend. We enjoyed our stay. The Mackinaw City Hampton Inn is not the Grand Hotel, but it's not supposed to be. It's a Hilton-brand budget hotel. I believe we got good value for the money. The room was clean and quiet, the staff friendly and helpful. The hotel is right across the street from two Mackinaw Island ferry terminals, and within easy walking distance of the "bright lights" of Central Avenue. Free wireless high-speed internet in the room worked flawlessly. If I had to complain about something, and it's not really a complaint as much as an observation , it's that the lobby breakfast area can fill up quickly (depending upon guest loading). But if you get down there early, you won't have a problem. Stay here and you will have a pleasant visit.

Our stay at this Hampton Inn was very disappointing. After checking into our room, we noticed a lot of crud on the carpet and questioned the cleanliness of the bedsheets. Although we were given another room, we had problems with being able to get hot water out of the sink and shower. The toilet handle broke and the light above the bathroom sink was burned out. The guests above our room were noisy late into the night. Plus, the security feature on the rear entry door was broke allowing anyone to enter the facility. Overall, we did not like this hotel and will not go back.
