“Bug City”

Hotel itself wasn't bad....very standard for the price you pay. What turned me off was the amount of small flies (midges) that were constantly swarming around the place. In the evening there was a layer (and I mean a layer) of midges all about the door, about 1/4 inch thick at the door step. It was just gross.......we had to dash in and out of our room to not let too many of them in.

My wife and I stayed in room 480, which is on the top floor on the north end of the building closest to the beach. We stayed June 14, 15 and 16. On entry into the room, there was a terrible odor, like sewer... We aired out the room, and ran water into the sink and tub to make sure the traps had water to block the smell. The smell went away and we left the patio door open a few inches. This worked while the wind was blowing hard, but not when the weather got better.

The wide patio door was in sad shape, and the screen was difficult to operate. The screen did not effectively hold out the swarms for Mayflies. The patio door latch was bent and the door would not lock. (not a great concern on the 4th floor in Mackinaw, but stranger things have happened)

The bathroom had a newer tub unit. We could tell because there are two large white plastic covers on the bedroom wall at the plumbing end of the tub that were not there during our 2012 visit. The door to the bathroom closes but does not latch because latch strike is not properly aligned. Not a big deal for a married couple. The strike is an easy fix; I wonder why it is left is such a poor state.

The floor lamp was placed by the HVAC unit. I tried to turn on the lamp and noticed it was not plugged in... I looked for an electrical outlet and found all the nearby units were being used by the HVAC and TV/cable unit. I moved the lamp to the short wall by the bathroom and plugged it in so we could use it. Again, an easy fix, but wonder why they left a lamp unplugged...

We went to the hot tub on our second nigh and found it to be over-filled with water. The water was about three inches over the top of the skimmer. (Water should be half way up the skimmer for best filtration) We used it the third night around 9:30PM, and there were no fresh towels in the bins, so we walked to the office. I told the night clerk there were no towels, and the manger said "there should be towels there". I replied that I agreed that there should be towels, but again, that there were no fresh towels, only wet and used towels. They gave us two from a closet and said they would re-stock them. Not sure when they restocked, maybe it was the next day. It sure wasn't before the tub closing.

The cleaning person did not leave new bars of soap, and also left a spray bottle on the sink. Also only had one floor towel on one day; None left the second and third days. Very poor room service in this regard.

About the mayflies. These are obviously not the fault of the hotel staff. However, they should at least keep the screens in good repair. Our screen was VERY difficult to move and did not seal well enough to keep the bugs out. (mayflies don't bite, just swarm, usually up one's nose...)

Overall, the room is dated with faded pictures on the walls. This is an average old hotel and is getting very long in the tooth. It is a great location, just one other hotel between it and the Arnold ferry dock.

Breakfast is the basic Mackinaw City fare typical of the area... Make your own waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, bagels, cereal... Barely worth getting up for, unless you really have to breakfast.

Decent enough staff, just an aging facility.

My wife and I used to enjoy this place, but it has gone down hill.... Sadly, we will find a different place to stay in Mackinaw....

Room Tip: Come to Mackinaw later in June to avoid the Mayflies... Room 480 has a great view with an end wi...

We had a suite in the newer building. Not only was there a sink in the coffee, refrigerator, microwave area, but there was a door to the bedroom. So much better than the usual half wall. We had a balcony overlooking a quiet beach. Scott was very helpful with suggestions & tickets. There were flying, non-biting insects all over Mackinac City & Mackinaw Island....a slight annoyance. We did not have a problem with them in the room.

We decided last minute to go to Mackinac for our honeymoon. Quality inn suites went above and beyond to accommodate us. The manager Scott and the staff were super friendly. Scott even got us together with other guests to have a bonfire. I loved the beach front room it was convenient. The room could use a little updating in the old building but other than that everything was perfect. Keep up the good job. We will definitely be back.

We stayed here the last weekend in May as a girls trip for a friends birthday. We had a beach view room with balcony. The room could really use some major updating. The view was nice, it looked as though there was a place on the beach for bonfires. We didn't really check out the rest of the hotel as there were A TON of bugs. Our room door when directly outside so any time the door opened a million bugs got in the room. Because of this no one wanted to leave the room to check out the pool or even get the continental breakfast in the morning. We did leave once to go for dinner and drinks (as this was the purpose of the trip) and the room FILLED with these tiny black bugs, on the brightside they didn't bite. But we did have to clean the bathtub and sink area in the morning as they were both full of dead and living bugs. So gross!!! Maybe later in the summer this won't be an issue.
I will say that all four of us agreed the beds were SUPER comfortable!!!!

We stayed there on May 17. Had a King size bed and a balcony view of the lake and bridge. Enjoyed the breakfast. We only stayed one night because we spent the next 2 days on Mackinac Isand. We have stayed at this hotel a few other times and have been just as pleased.
