This place is about as Yooper as they come--and I mean that as a compliment. The mid-century decor is so dated it's contemporary (the rocking chairs alone would fetch a few hundred dollars apiece in a West Elm catalogue), the rates are as low as they get these days, and the setting is stunning, without being marred by the condos, traffic jams, and upscale shopping centers that have taken over so many of this country's beautiful places. Take advantage of this little slice of Americana while you can.

The guy who checked us in was very friendly. The rooms were exceptionally clean, large, beds comfortable, and internet access. Close to town, casino, and the boardwalk. You cannot beat this value! Picnic tables available, view to Lake Michigan or chairs out front to watch traffic. The other guests said they have stayed there for several years. Coffee in the office as we were told at 7:30 sharp! We look forward to another visit to the Star motel. We also found a couple places to eat-the 3 Seasons for breakfast a short distance from the motel and the 40 Bar and Grill on South 2nd St for dinner (the four of us enjoyed it so much we went back our second night for pizza).

We stayed here based on other reviews on Tripadvisor. There are lots of these old fashioned motor courts in the area and they all look the same. The lady at check in was quite crotchety and we didn't exactly feel welcomed. We would have left but we were tired from driving all day so we bit the bullet. Plus the price felt way above what we feel it should have been. We liked being able to have our car right in front of our room. The room was clean but felt retro. The TV was from the 70's but had a lot of channels available. The sign said high speed Internet but we couldn't get on and our iPhone 5 had intermittent reception. There is a small refrigerator with freezer but no microwave or coffee maker. The bed was small for 2 people but pretty comfortable. The lady at check in said she would have coffee available and access to the ice machine in the morning in the office but when we pulled out at 7:30am the office was locked up tight. Technically the property backs to Lake Michigan but its pretty far away and there was no path we could find to get to it. Not sure if it was the time of year but there were lots of flying gnat-like bugs and mosquitos. Lots of motorcyclists stayed here and they were in rooms on either side of us so it was a bit noisy in the morning with them starting their bikes. We ate at the Seasons restaurant a bit up the road and it was pretty good but a little pricey for the type of diner it was. We don't think we would stay here again.

We stayed one night and picked this place because of the good reviews. May not have stayed if just driving by. Could use some paint outside. But oh so clean inside. Wonderful that can walk down to the beach. Will stay again!

We enjoyed the clean, quality room everything worked well. Simple updated colors, fairly quiet even though it's on highway 2. We walked on Lake Michigan beachfront which is accessible behind motel. Room had picture windows road & back, very nice. We will stay again.
