“Architectural GEM!”

Alden Dow Home and Studio
Ranked #4 of 29 things to do in Midland

If you appreciate architecture, design, history, innovation, and common sense...this is a MUST visit. The property exterior is inviting but it's no match for what you are about to see and learn inside of the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio. This place is an educational gem, right in the heart of Michigan. From adult to child, there is so much to be learned in this one place. You will leave inspired, enriched, empowered.

Take the tour if you have any interest in 20th century residential architecture. Alden Dow also did some public and commercial buildings but is was the residences that still really shine. You can see the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright, but Dow carried that further and developed a more comfortable, liveable, contemporary style that is still appealing.

This home was surrunded by water and the architecture was unbelievably contemporary looking for the 1930s. Frank Lloyd Wright was one of his friends. Both equally talented. The home was very large, the different angles and decorations very interesting. A lot of history in the home since it was left exactly as it was with even the same books in his library. This is a must see-- at least 2 hour tour.

Reservations required. Allow 2 1/2 hours. In 1982, Alden B. Dow was the first recipient of the Frank Lloyd Wright Creativity Award and one visit to his home and studio in Midland, Michigan and you can see why! The house is located adjacent to Dow Gardens, built on a pond in an area that used to be an apple orchard. The interior and exterior is designed using Mr. Dow's patented six sided rhombuses which the docent said actually increases in strength when stacked. A geometer would certainly appreciate the unique angles created using Mr. Dow's system. Each room is brightly painted and takes your breath away...especially when you imagine just what it must have been like as a child growing up in such a creative, organic abode. I realize most know Alden B. Dow as an architect, but when you look closely at the 'way' he created..how his work is so seamlessly connects to nature, you realize he was also a philosopher.

The house is phenomenal and our tour guide was truly excellent. The only thing that prevents me from giving it "5 stars" are the somewhat "wonky" hours. Make sure that you carefully plan your TOUR RESERVATIONS ahead of time.
