“Beaware of Jaz Oriental Mersa Matruh”
Reviewed 9 May 2010

Recently returned from the Jaz oriental Mersa Matruh, we can't fault the hotel, the room was very spacious, clean and fresh linen and towels everyday. The down side the pool was not heated so very cold as the weather was not always hot as travelled at Easter, the beach/pool bar ahd limited selection of snacks and sandwiches. The food in the restaurant, make the most of the breakfast as the lunch time and evening meals were not always good and the food was always cold and nearly always left overs from the day before especially in the salad bar. There was no evening entertainment, and be aware that you have to pay for your water and milk for you tea and coffee in the room. You also have to pay for the mini bar which I think is a bit silly as you are all inclusive and they serve all these drinks for free in the bars. Just a money maker on behalf of the hotel!!The staff are very friendly and helpful but over keen in the restaurant when taking you plate away whilst you are still eating. There is no where to go apart from walking aroung the hotel complex or the beach, you can go on a trip with Thomsons to the town of Mersa Matruh but dont waste your money you spend money time on the coach than in the shops and you have an armed guard with you at all times and you go to see were Cleopatra Bath which is just crap and full of rubbish. The Rommel museum was just a cave with some old war stuff again waste of time, hense don't do the shop and rock. Would not recommend and not 5 star restaurant food.

Spent a week at this hotel. I haven't had such a relaxing break for a long while. Wish I was still there. There were some noise problems after a few days with the Italians, but I understand that this hotel will no longer be booked by Thomsons. The hotel is very clean and the beach is spectacular. I would certainly book one of the other Jaz hotels along this strip in future.

My wife and I went for a quiet weeks break which started off fine.
On the fourth day a large group of Italian travel agents arrived which changed the theme of our holiday completely.
One night they decided to have an extremely loud outdoor disco directly outside most of the hotel rooms which we complained twice to reception about. This din went on until 2.30 am when, following complaints from umpteen other guests unable to sleep they reluctantly stopped.
The hotel is clean & modern & beach is nice & most of the hotel staff were friendly.
For some reason the hotel staff seem to bow to the whims of the (extremely loud and rude) Italians, rather than the Brits.
We have been to egypt 6 times and would rate this hotel a 3/4 star.
This was the worst airport we have visited in 26 years of travelling (one small shop car boot style). No room to swing a cat.

Whats the similiarity between the camel ride operator at the pyramids of Giza and the management of Jaz oriental? The answer is both are the same in cheating or misleading the client.

We called from abroad to ask for the rates. We wanted to know the rates to book for a 3 night stay there. They quoted USD 198 for full board for a family of 4 and a family room. When we arrived after hours travelling from Alexandria, they conveniently booked us into Al Maza instead and decided to charge us USD 250 instead. To make things worse, instead of full board, bfast and dinner provided, they said for that price we will only get bfast (half board)! Or else we needed to pay USD 340 for full board PER NIGHT!!! I have 2 young children one age 5 and the other 8 years old and it was getting dark and we were too exhausted to argue. So we gave in after at least an hour of showing the proof of discussion held on the telephone, emails, names of staffs who quoted us the pricing etc. The place is nice but you need to pay for things that normally you need not pay for the bomb you're already paying. e.g. Health spa, gazebo at the beach. It is ridiculous! Also, the food was mediocre and for breakfast, repeated menu daily..yucks! We sincerely felt cheated to the highest degree. The view from the room wasn't great either most rooms except the suite have the garden or neighbouring hotel views (your balcony opens up to another persons balcony on the other side..e.g Jaz Oriental hotel)! We used the laundry facilities and there was a leaflet stating that the services is 15 euro since we were somehow cheated when we were registering the room we enquire to the reception and to our dismay they claimed it was an old advertisement. After much hassle and arguing they realized they make a mistake and agreed with content of the leaflet. Also we did try the room service but frankly speaking with the 5 star labelling the food came 1 hour later and it was cold and tasteless. The pool is big but not heated so when u come around april it was totally turn off!...The nearest town is matruh which is about 30 min away but no McD ,KFC pizza hut open as we were being told its seasonal..

I will never go there again. I think there are plenty of great places to visit in this world. This resort was truly over rated and as an experienced traveller, i certainly not recommend anyone reading this to visit the place. I hope thomson or first choice or anyone affliated to trip advisor should realize it by now and not just ripping ppls money without telling the actual scenario of the place.

One thing i learnt thru this experience is that dont believe any negotiations if it involve an egyptian and frankly speaking my stay here in Egypt is much more expensive then staying in USA for the same rate resort.

We stayed at the Jaz Oriental for 2 weeks in April.
First impressions are excellent as the reception area is impressive and you receive a lovely welcome from the staff.
The rooms are lovely, loads of space and really comfy beds.
The staff in the bars, restaurants & housekeeping (room cleaners) are fantastic on the whole and most provide a 5* service with a smile. Nothing is too much trouble and if there's anything you want, just mention it to a member a staff and they will go out of their way to provide it if possible.
Memo is a star and does a great job with Mido & Mohammed who are also great!
The food in the restaurant was good but definitely needed to be hotter.
It was a nice, friendly, relaxed atmosphere, great to chill out!

Negatives

The airport is not used to commercial air traffic as it's a millitary facility. They do their best but everything is very slow.
NO DUTY FREE at all on your return trip and they do not sell alcoholic drinks as refreshments.
The hotel has virtually no entertainment.
They do play music constantly which get's mind numbingly boring as they have so few cd's to choose from. Might be an idea to take them a few compilation cd's to give yourself a bit of variety.
The food needs more variation and needs to be served hotter as most things were cold by the time you got to your table.

OVERALL

It's got a lot of plus points and I'm sure as the season goes on things will improve.
The hotel manager was very keen to get guests feedback and comments so the hotel could rectify anything people were not happy with.
There were only English guests in the hotel during April and not very many of us during the last part of the holiday due to the problem with the volcano.
Italians were due to arrive the day we left and they bring 2 chefs and their own animation team with them so it should get livier.
Unless you're expecting an action packed holiday with loads to do I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
I would consider going back in a coupe of years once they get more established.

The hotel was fantastic!!!! Definitely worth its 5 star rating...
We were the first flight of British people ever to go to this resort, so there was very little information on the internet about the hotel. Everything we found was in Italian!!!
However, when we got there, there were no Italians at all.

The food in the hotel was good- there was a large buffet style restaurant and a pool bar serving various snacks throughout the day. There is also a Lebanese style restaurant that is not part of the all-inclusive package. This is reasonably priced and definitely worth a vist- the food is gorgeous!!! Drinks are available at all of the restaurants, but need to be paid for in the Lebanese restaurant.

The pool is large, and has a depth of 150cm in all areas. There is also a childrens pool, which is 50cm deep. When we visited the pools were very cold, but we were assured that a pool heater was going to be purchased!!

There was no shortage of sunbeds, and the sunbathing area was well-kept and relaxing.

The hotel is set on the beach front, and has lovely pale sands and warmish water. There are also pedalos and sea kayaks available to hire.

The hotel has a few shops, which are reasonably priced but do shop around in the other hotels, as some prices are competitive.

The hotel spa is definitely worth a visit. It offers massages, facials, body scrubs etc. and also has a gym, sauna, steamroom and jacuzzi.

The hotel interior is very luxurious, with a traditional Egyptian theme and a hint of glamour. The double bedrooms have two queen size beds, flat screen TVs, seating area, large wardrobes and large bathroom with bath, shower, WC and two sinks. The rooms are very luxurious, and the housekeeping service is fantastic. Every day we found a different arrangement of towels on our beds, in some amazing shapes!!

The hotel staff were all lovely, and eager to help.

The hotel is apparently getting its own entertainment team, but when we were ther we had to go to the Jaz Almaza to participate in any entartainment. This was not a problem, as it was close by- a 5 minute walk- and the entertainment was very good.

The only downside was the resort. Mersa Matruh is a brand new resort, so there is very little to do outside of the hotels. Jaz Oriental is set next to Jaz Crystal and Jaz Almaz, but other than that there is NOTHING for miles. The city of Mersa Matruh is about 35minutes away, but you must be supervised by a guide if you want to leave the hotel complex. The city is safe, but our rep told us the government are very "precious" about British tourists, and want us to be kept as safe as possible. Its nice to know you are being cared for, but a bit restrictive if you like exploring on your own. Saying that, the hotel was so nice we didnt want to leave anyways!!!!

Overall, i would definitely return to this hotel; it was a fantastic setting and a fabulous holiday!!

Having returned from a week at the Jaz Oriental what a fantastic hotel. The service was second to none and the staff could not do enough for the guests.

Food was great and plenty of it. Drink as much as you want with everthing available when you wanted it.

Rooms spotless and the hotel could not be any cleaner. Great beds for a good nights sleep.

Beach great lovely sand, only down point is that it’s in the middle of nowhere so unless you want to just relax it may not be the place for you. However it looks like the Jaz group intend to make this a new resort and are presently building a golf course, extension to the Oriental and a shopping mall. Be interested to see how it develops in a few years.

The airport is a nightmare at Mersa Matruh as it’s a military airport and is not geared up to the package holiday industry and took us over 2hours to get through immigration and passport – no great but again it looks like they are building extensions to the airport terminal.

Went out on a Thomson flight which was appalling as they forgot to load any meals and then decided to rip you off for the tea and coffee that should have been included. The cabin staff had no idea on what was going on and were running around like headless chickens. Luckily managed to eat at the hotel as they kept the evening meals going – Well done Oriental
