I was determined to visit while on a working visit from Australia. The site itself is hard up against the Mediterranean with spectacular harbour, forums (OK, fora), temples, beautiful theatre and a spectacular circus located a few kms away. You can walk within all the ruins, nothing is off limits. If you can, visit the 2nd Century bathhouse on the way home to Tripoli. Carry water and sunscreen.

As other reviewers have indicated, this is one sight in Libya not to be missed. Try to get there as early as possible: I went there shortly after the gates opened at 0800 and had the entire place to myself for an hour and a half, with not even a security guard in sight. It was absolutely magical. If only one could experience the same at Pompeii or Ephesus! I wish, however, I'd remembered to take some mosquito repellant with me, as the little devils were a real pain in the neck - and other exposed body parts! I found the museum rather disappointing: unfortunately, the lighting had failed, so it was difficult seeing some of the exhibits, and many of the choicest works of art are not here but in the Jamahiriyya Museum in Tripoli. Nonetheless, it is still worth visiting - and I was told that the electricity would be re-connected shortly.

The amount and quality of the artifacts is amazing. But more amazing is that you will be the only person at the site. I almost felt guilty--like I was sneeking around a closed museum. Take anything you may need as there are few facilities. Wear a good hat--there is no shade in the middle of the desert!!

Stunning place to go. With the lack of any real tourists there to see it, it simply looks like a city deserted and forgotten. Amazing restorations and remains, amphitheatre simply stunning, very easy to stand in the main street with nobody around and imagine you are really there in the early centuries. Take plenty of film or memory, the most photogenic place on the planet!
