“Best hotel choice in Ghadames!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2014

There are minimal hotel choices in Ghadames, and the Dar Ghadames Hotel is by far the nicest hotel in the city! The rooms are simple, but very clean and pleasant. The mattresses on the beds were great! It was nice to have a little balcony area outside of the room. The hotel staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. The food was good and the portions were large. There is wifi internet in some parts of the lobby, but it is not always guaranteed to be working. The hotel is situated about a 15-20 minute walk from the downtown area. The rooms had TV's and AC units in them, and soap and shampoo were provided as well as blowdryers. I would highly recommend the Dar Ghadames Hotel!

Visited this hotel a few days ago for three nights. My party of five were the only guests.
There is breakfast only now.

LD 110 night for a single room.

There is no phone number for this place and no interent connection. Only one English speaking TV channel (MBC 2)

The receptionist would call us on our day out to see what time we would be back so he could open the Hotel. Very quiet.

Without a doubt this is the best hotel in Libya: the open space, the design, the Berber-styled furnisher and Berber carpets, and the food, make this hotel a must see for any visitor visiting Ghadames. For 120 Libyan Dinars (around €70 Euro) for a single room, or 150 Libyan Dinars for a twin or double room, the hotel is an excellent value for money. You will never regret it and you will never forget it.

Even though its very inconvenient to get to, Ghadames is a "must visit" place to visit for any tourist in Libya.

The hotel has been built and decorated in a very attractive semi-traditional style, with an impressive foyer and well maintained grounds. Its a good modern take on traditional Ghadames architecture. Its located in an isolated quiet spot on the dge of town, a 30mins walk away.

Whilst staying here for two nights, some guest facilities at the hotel were either closed or only open for very limited hours (eg restaurant, coffee lounge). There were only 2-3 other tourist groups, which made the place rather soul less. Everything was clean and reasonably (ie why not remove dead plants ?) well maintained.

Our room was very good. It had a small patio overlooking the gardens, was a good size, and was very modern by Libyan standards. Furnishing was good, and our bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was reasonably spacious, modern and very clean, and functioned properly. Would have benefited from a little more care with basic maintenance.

Breakfast was adequate (= 2 star), with very limited and sometimes poor (ie stale) choices. Despite having a dinner inclusive rate, the restaurant was closed, and all the "inclusives" were shipped off to a youth hostel hall for an "all tourists together" evening meal. Acceptable quality, and standard Libya tourist fare, but I wouldn't choose to eat in a youth hostel, and wouldn't find it acceptable even if I'd booked into a 2 Star hotel ! On the second evening, we simply opted out of the hotel dinner, and insisted that our tour rep find us somewhere else to eat, and paid extra.

In our limited dealings with the front desk, they were courteous and professional, but not very engaging. The restaurant / coffee bar staff were not very interested in serving the hotel guests.

Overall, by far the best hotel (of 4) on our trip to Libya. The hotel just seemed to lack something - perhaps experienced & enthusiastic on site senior management ? A shame, since with the quality of the buildings and bedrooms, it could so easily be a very good hotel.

This 4-star hotel looks stunning on the outside -- built in traditional-architectual style. The pleasing appearance continues in the reception area with high ceilings, arches and a palm-wood roof. But we found it mostly downhill from there. First, the place was almost deserted with only three other guests in residence during our first night (we stayed for two nights in December). It seemed eerie to be knocking around by ourselves in the huge halls. Potted dead or drooping plants with brown-edged leaves lined the corridor to our room, which was a long way from Reception. We wondered why they failed to give us a room closer to the entrance.

The room itself was clean. It had an appealing traditional motif and a comfortable bed. A door led to an outside patio, but the weather was too chilly to sit out there. Drawbacks included the 10 minutes needed to run water before it became hot and the lack of any storage space. Also, the towel rack seemed to have broken off the bathroom wall as we found it stashed above the closet with our towels. The safe sat locked and despite many requests, no one ever came to open it.

When we asked Reception for two additional pillows, we were told they probably didn't have any. I wondered what was on the beds in dozens of empty rooms. Eventually we got the pillows. When we asked if it was possible to get Kleenix in the room, we were told to buy it in the gift shop, which was not open.

The room price included one buffet dinner in the hotel restaurant. Because there were so few guests, a set meal was served instead. We sat in the big dimly lit restaurant alone. The waiter never told us what we could expect to eat. But we got a good soup and salad, greasy chicken with fries and fruit for dessert. The room price also included a buffet breakfast but that became a set meal as well. Again we sat in the dining room alone with plates of stale bread and two small cartons of yogurt.

A couple of more guests arrived during our second night's stay, but we only knew that because we saw them at breakfast the next morning. We opted to eat in town our second night, which required transport from our guide. The hotel is not located close to anything and we found it uncomfortable to walk along a busy Libyan highway after dark.
We asked Reception for a morning walk-up call, but it never came.

I normally wouldn't recommend this hotel to a friend, but I'm unsure that there is anything better in town. We were told that an old hotel at the edge of the old medina is being restored and will be open soon. That may end up being a better choice.

We stayed in Ghadames for two nights - as reported elsewhere the hotel appeared to be empty. Our room was very comfortable but the breakfast buffet was spartan, and during our stay the restaurant was closed in the evening so we had to eat at the local Pizza shop in town. The hotel is a long way out of town - and we we found it exhausting to get to the old city in 40+ degree heat. We never saw anyone in the coffee shop and wouldn't have risked it if there was! As for the internet access - a set of unconnected computers.

The hotel is very stylish in appearance and the reception staff were pleasant and courteous. However certain facilities, such as the coffee lounge and internet access were no longer available, and the phone kiosks were used to store cleaning materials. The place seemed almost deserted and a bit like the Marie Celeste.
The real problems however lay in the restaurant, bar and their staff. The selection at breakfast was very poor; no fresh fruit and weak orange squash labelled as fruit juice. The bread was not fresh either. When a fellow-guest [Spanish] asked for sliced bread, which they were serving as toast, 'untoasted', the response was no!
The first night there was a limited self-service buffet, and the grill served over-cooked chewy lamb. The second night it was a plated meal, apparently consisting of left-overs from the previous night. None of the meat [lamb and a burger] was edible. Our Libyan tour guide who had been to this hotel about a year earlier, agreed with us that the food was 'unacceptable'. The bar and restaurant staff were almost surly and not in the least interested in serving us.
A new boutique hotel in the middle of Ghadames, which looks to be very nice, will be open within a few months. I suggest that you ask your tour operator or guide to book you in there!!
