“Stunning location, excellent service, shame the food is not great”
Reviewed 9 October 2010

The location is unbeatable; the view will simply take your breath away! The rooms are lovely too, modern but with a minimalist style, so the view of the FR Canyon remains the star of the show, which you can also enjoy from your outdoor shower!
The staff are very friendly and attentive, very well managed by Ruth, the English manager originally from South London.
For the price you pay, you’d expect to get excellent food but it wasn’t the case. The food was OK, but as the ingredients were poor so the result wasn’t great. However, the location is so remote that it is almost justified that they can’t get the best and freshest ingredients.
Overall I’d say the place is good value, compared to other luxury accommodation in Namibia.

I stayed here with friends after driving up from Capetown. Be aware that the drive is longer than you expect, the last few miles take ages but it is well worth it. The lodges are very noisy at night due to the wind whistling past them as it rushes up the canyon but it was almost worth being kept awake to look at the stars all night as the night sky here is the best I have ever seen in the world, there is more milkyway visible here due to the total lack of light pollution. Staff are amazing and so helpful, even selling us some diesel so we could make the next fuel station, also good advice on driving conditions and some unmarked roads. The pool, though not the most spotless, has the best view in the world and it is amazing that they manage to have one at all in this location.

Fish River Lodge is the only lodge located on the west rim of the Fish River Canyon - that means directly on the rim, not 20km away like the lodges on the east rim. All bungalows have a veranda directly over the canyon rim with breathtaking views. The quivertrees around the lodge make it even more special.
The lodge is in modern style: straight lines, large windows, only a few but carefully selected decorations. The straight and minimalistic design fits very good into the harsh surroundings.
The briefing on arrival regarding the activities was very good and tried to care for individual wishes. The logde offers a guided full day trek to the canyon ground, a guided full day jeep tour into the canyon, a self guided three hours hike on the rim on a very well grommed path and helicopter flights.
The access over 70 km gravel road and 20 km gravel track is quite slow but feasable for a small 2 wheel drive like our hyundai getz.
The lodge was opened end of 2009. It is newly built near the old Grande View Lodge, but is not at the same place and not the same style.

The fish river lodge is very modern and has an incredible view. It's situated directly at an edge of the canyon. The rooms are very clean and roomy. The beds are comfortable and the food was good.
