Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort

A little pricey for food and accomodation but given the location, I'd imagine the cost of getting anyhting there is the major reason for this. A lovely place to recouperate after the 90km canyon hike. The canyon itself is worth the trip.

Room Tip: If camping watch out for baboons in the morning.

Great rooms and wonderfully situated at the end of the Canyon. They have natural hot springs indoors and a big swimming pool which is really necessary when its so hot there. Quite a good restaurant also.

We have visited Ai-Ais several time since the renovations and re-opening about 3 years ago and enjoyed each stay.

For a lodge in the middle of the desert it is a nice stop-over and worth the trip. The road in varies between excellent dirt to fairly rutted but still drivable in a sedan. The lodge is in a lovely setting in the canyon and a perfect spot to rest after a Fish River hike. The "River View" rooms, while not really looking onto the river, do have a nicer view and are better positioned next to the pool and are worth the extra cost. In busy times they could be a bit noisy but we didn't experience that as we weren't there at peak times.

The food is reasonable especially given the location and the service is reasonably good. The verandah is a great place for a cold drink. The hot spring pools are very nice to relax in and are child-friendly although the tiles can be slippery. The only negative is that the lodge is getting a bit run down and while still in reasonable condition it is starting to deteriorate. But all in all a good stopover if you are in the area and worth the experience.

Room Tip: River view rooms are better and right next to the pool.

We were camping at Ai-Ais.
Positives:
- well-equipped, large campsite
- kitchen areas with communal stoves, scullery
- clean toilets/showers
- fuel available
- beautiful setting
- outdoor and indoor (naturally heated) pools
- tennis courts (not well maintained)
- electricity and water at all campsites

Negative:
- bright lights in campsite destroy the otherwise stunning night sky
- maintenance is not what it should be (example: ladies changing area in spa - shower drain blocked, no water in any sink taps, no toilet paper, hand towels or hand dryer). This is a general problem with most NWR facilities - they get the big picture right, and then fall down on the details.
- shop is ok if you like to eat pilchards, corned meat and chips. Very limited food stock and very expensive. Do have bread (every third day delivered), wood, drinks, curios/t-shirts, etc, limited selection of frozen meat and water.

Comments
- restaurant (service and food distinctly average, though lovely shaded bar area with DSTV for that match you can't miss).
- indoor spa free if staying in rooms, if camping it's R10 adults, R5 kids per day
- buy wood before coming, it's expensive here. Bring food, etc.
- there are no warnings given, but baboons raid the campsite around dawn each day, so do not leave any food, or anything used for food, out overnight.
- we found some noisy campers a problem, with loud music and kids yelling up to midnight.
- restaurant, fuel and shop all open 7am, shop closes 6pm, fuel at 5pm. Restaurant opens for supper at 6.30pm.

Camping at Ais ais is probably the way to go.
The rooms are very dated and noisy being next to the indoor spa pools.
Food and service in restaurant is average to poor.
The only thing going for it is the drive there and the magnificent scenery so if you are not camping it is still worth going.
Prices are high for the quality but I suppose this is what you must pay in such an isolated place.

Ais-Ais is a great place to stay over. We camped for one night at Ais-Ais. The bathrooms are clean. The camping space is great. It was a little cold, but the warm water of the outside pool was inviting after our long journey from Cape Town. The restaurant is ok but expensive. Their shop is not well stocked so you may want to make sure you have all you need if you are self-catering.

We have just come back from a camping trip which included the Ai-Ais hot springs. The camp sites were extremely clean and well looked after. The ablutions were also nice and clean. Just one problem was that the drains didn't drain quick enough and the water spilt over the edge. The pools were also great. Would definitely go back there.
