It was a pleasant surprise to return to Ai-Ais after a few years and see that several of our previous issues had been addressed. Congratulations to the team for picking up the place since our last visit.

What they have fixed since last time are:

The outdoor pool was spotless and clean! I could see my feet at the bottom of the pool it is was crystal clear. I had arguably the best swim of my life at midnight, floating on my back, staring at the starts in the hot, clean water with not a soul around. Brilliant.

The bar area and restaurant was clean and tidy. No cobwebs in the roof or dust - very nice!

Shop owner was friendly, well stocked with beer and wood in case you didn't bring.

Breakfast staff were friendly and restaurant was well stocked.

This time when we left, we were proud that we had started our friend's from the U.K.'s Namibian trip at Ai-Ais. Well done!

Positives - absolutely beautiful location

Areas in need of improvement - old, tired accommodation. Restaurant menu very limited with poor, slow service. Shame the spa closes so early in evenings considering distance people travel to get there.

Ai-Ais Lodge/Resort is in an amazing place featuring a property that was unfortunately rather oddly designed but perhaps made sense at the time given the remote location as well as potential for flooding. The staff are excellent, welcoming, friendly and caring. And the food was great (in particular perfectly-cooked kudu steaks). If you want to be at the base of the canyon then this is the place to be. Though you might be better off camping here. Read on:

While the river view rooms are ultimately preferable to the mountain view rooms due to the superior views and sunset, they are susceptible to more noise given the road as well as campers just beyond the balconies. Plus having the campers' toilets in full view from your balcony is a bit of a turn-off. So do consider a mountain view room when booking. The rooms also could definitely use some additional upkeep viz repainting. In addition, the rooms admit very little light -- though obviously that is an advantage in hot weather to keep them cool but rather sad in the colder months. But the camping looked ideal. Maybe we should have done that.

In any case, the restaurant and bar have excellent service, and the alcohol selections span about six or seven more pages than the food selections which is ideal in a location such as this.

Shop has excellent supply of provisions as well as gifts/souvenirs. The breakfast buffet offered a nice selection and they had good espresso. The outdoor pool is also nice (see photo).

This was like an entrance into a fairy tale. Beautiful Namibian desert landscape suddenly turned into hill area, bringing us always more somehow downwards into the mountain. Very special and starnge at the same time. Then the resort was to be reached, very well kept off, with amazing staff with beautiful hotel rooms and hot tubs inside the hotel area and one big poor outside which was even better to swim in cos it was really nicely warm. I felt the healing power of this waters and place is immense. It really has something angelic to all the area and the place so if u are around in Namibia and Fishriver canyon, this place should not be missed. It is as few other places in Namibia truely magical.

Cycled down from the Canyon Roadhouse today, arriving at this camp in the afternoon. It was windy and hot so the hot springs spa was wonderful to relax in.

To the camp itself must have almost 60 numbered individual campsite spread out (toooo closely) along, and above the sandy river, some are just 40 or so feet wide (enough for a single camper van), however we were able to claim 2 of the camping sites (a bit bigger), as the group size was 16 persons, 2 vehicles with trailers and 12 bicycles. The grass to set the tents up on though is poor, but the ablutions and cooking areas very nice. Have read some of the other reviews and agree with several where they say that a little bit more attention to the grounds (including irrigation to the lawns), and the site would be superb, BUT that does not address the number of visitors / campers, in so small an area, so for my money I'll go else where if I visit Namibia again, after all Africa is about wide open spaces, not loud crowds. If I want to be with hundreds of other campers I'll go to Yellowstone or Yosemite in the US, or perhaps Butlins in the UK

As an aside, the rooms for the higher class of traveler than us looked very nice. No idea as to their costs
