“wow what a potential”
Reviewed 25 April 2012

Very nice how ever i feel the potholes and hot tourism spots cant be enjoyed as you are harrased by people selling things. sadly they make a nusance of them self. the resort need to train the staff more, they are not as good as they should be. however i enjoyed it and i can imagine how good it was a few years ago. this place have so much potential, sadly staff think its for them, and clients is a hasle. sad. need good management and new staff.

This is a copy of an email that I wrote to the CEO of Forever Resorts during my stay there.

"I am currently a staying at your Blyde Canyon Resort and must say that even after one night (of the four planned and booked) we have found the place to be very poor in design and equipment, and way overpriced relative to the quality of the units. We are in units 87 and 88.

We are extremely well traveled both in South Africa and internationally and wherever possible use self-catering accommodation. The lack of attention to detail and the pathetic design of the units is some of the worse experienced anywhere :

- The equipment in the kitchen is so poor it is almost impossible to prepare a dinner.
- The BBQ is so remote positioned from the unit it is as if it is for communal use.
- The is absolutely no provision for food preparation when it rains, only two small cooking rings with the temperature signage scoured off and no oven .
- Poor selection of cooking equipment even for the BBQ.
- The electric kettles in both units had cables that were frayed and in one case burnt through to the core, dangerous and illegal.
- The shower door leaked so badly, the water ran into the bedroom.
- The ceiling of the bathroom is stained from leakage and needs replacing
- In an area of great scenic beauty there is nowhere one can sit and enjoy the view, the outside area which is designed as a car port has a solid stone construction wall that prevents one seeing anything in any direction.
- The baboon issue has simply not been dealt with, how can you expect guests to lock themselves in their bedrooms with all windows firmly closed and the air conditioning on because the baboons get into the units even when one is inside. Why not provide the windows with mosquito netting which works everywhere else in Africa in preventing baboons and Vervets accessing the dwellings. The attitude of your staff when complaining about these issues was offhand to say the least.
- Imagine if you can this picture, it is an extremely rainy day ( it really is ), there is nowhere one can cook outdoors, the is no way one can prepare anything vaguely like a good meal in the pathetically equipped kitchen. One cannot sit outside as there is no place to do so, if one sits inside one has to have the windows closed because of the aforementioned ape problem, what a brilliant place to spend a weekend !!!!

All one can say is what a dump, next year we are renting a beautifully restored 16th Century house in Umbria in Italy, per person the cost is R300 pp per night versus the rate in this place of R400 per night. The Italian house comes equipped with a six plate gas hob, large oven ,espresso coffee machine , large flat screen LCD TV, wireless internet, open fireplaces, antique furniture , with free wood supply etc.etc. South Africa with your company leading from the front has become overpriced and non-competitive."

We stayed at Forever Resort Blyde Canyon for four nights. The location is beautiful and the views on the canyon and the Three Rondavels from the upper viewpoint are stunning and magnificent. The resort is also an excellent spot to visit the whole Panorama Route. The restaurant on the spot was not cheap, but the buffet food was fine. The older chalet we hired was basic, the small kitchen is also the sitting room. But these chalets are very good value for money for a spot like this. Always lock the door and close your windows, the baboons are really looking for every opportunity to get in and get your food.

From checking in to checking out we loved this place. The views are beyond outstanding. The trails well maintained and stunning. The accommodation that we had was clean, well appointed and exceedingly well looked after. The only negative about the whole experience was being harassed by baboons but when one gets to see klipspringers just a stone's throw from one's house it is all worth it. Good value for money!!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the 4 star if possible.

We stayed in standard 2 bedroom chalet. Although there was enough sleeping space to accommodate 4 people, the living area was tiny. We wouldn't mind so much if the TV was in the living area, but unfortunately it was in the master bedroom, which was a bit inconvinient. Place was clean when we arrived, but the maintenance could have been better - one day we were raided by monkeys (please, DO thake the warnings seriously) which made lot of mess - something we thought could be handled by cleaners, but in the end we ended up cleaning after the cleaners... So not too impressed here. Overall our stay was very pleasant and the magnificent location compensates all the small disadvantages.

the position of the resort is great, you can see the three rondavels just in front of you going to the restaurant and everything is just great if you wake up with such a view. The chalet were nice and with a very tasteful bathroom. We found everything really exceptional allso the quality of sleep was just great. The only thing we found a bit expensive for the south african standards was the restaurant. But for the rest the staff was really nice, friendly and smiling.

The big plus point for the resort is its stunning location literally on the edge of the Blyde River Canyon. The views from our terrace of the Three Rondavels were unbeatable. The resort is beautifully maintained, both the grounds and the accommodation, however, the interiors are very dated and in need of a major modernisation programme. We stayed in the Guest House which was well equipped, beautifully clean and very spacious, but the decor and furnishings were straight out of the 1970s!
Several hiking trails start from the resort and are clearly marked and well maintained. We did the Leopard and Guinea Fowl trails and didn't see a single other person all day. All in all, good value for money, great location and a safe bet, but definitely in need of a facelift.
