Valley View Backpackers
Reviewed 2 May 2014

We lived in the Kruger Cottage. It is a very basic cottage with 2 rooms (one with a bunk bed and the other with a king sized bed) kitchen and bathroom. Bring your own towels, it comes at extra cost! The kitchen is very basic but fulfilled all its duties. Valley View has a superb location, being near must-see waterfalls and the Panorama Route. The staff is welcoming and informative. The main house has a cozy patio where we ate and played board games provided. There were many pamphlets and maps to navigate the area and make the best of your stay. I would recommend it to people who are fine with having a basic, hearty stay and not luxury :)

A clean, beautiful backpackers, well-equipped kitchen and friendly stuff. We had one of the small rooms without bathroom. Outside there's a beautiful terrace...a great place to eat, drink a glass of wine and meet the other guests.

A nice Hostel with very friendly owners whom are very helpfull with information and tours. The rondavel we stayed in was small but nice, cold in winter but we had very good wheather. The surroundings are beautifull and the place itself has a very homey and chill atmosphere. Internet is an additional charge, breakfast can be provided but need to be mentioned before 5.30 and laundry is only early in the mroning. So unfortunately we could not do our laundry as we arrived in the afternoon and left early meoning again.

My partner and I stayed at Valley View Backpackers for two nights. I had previously been in touch with Melinda via email. Melinda was very helpful and quick in answering all of my questions!

The reason I have given Valley View 3 stars is for a number of reasons. A few staple items were not provided - the bathrooms did not have any hand soap, which is quite off-putting. And in spite of the signs stating "Thou shalt not take toilet paper," someone had pilfered the toilet paper on the evening of our arrival, and we were left with only a few sheets over night. Furthermore, there was no trash can in the bedroom. My partner and were fighting off colds and were forced to throw used tissue into a corner of the bedroom.

The bedroom itself also appeared to have been very recently built, as there was a distinct varathane smell throughout. Lighting in the room was insufficient for reading at night, which required us to use our phones as flashlights, which in turn drained their power. They only had one electrical outlet in the room and this was at the far corner from the room, away from the bed.

The finer points of the accommodation cannot be left unsaid. The cabin we stayed in was very charming and the room and linens were clean (I give 3 stars for cleanliness because of the lack of hand soap in the bathroom). Although it was cold at night, we were given extra blankets and were therefore quite comfortable. The staff were very friendly throughout our stay. Moreover, it is very economical accommodation, so if you are not off-put by a lack of soap, minimal toilet paper, poor reading lamps, and a varathane odour, I would recommend staying here!

Stayed here for 3 nights and although it was very cold (1400-1600 meters high and winter season), we had a good time. Excellent stop before heading into Kruger, but also to explore the wonderfull area with Blyd river canyon as absolute must see. Very friendly staff, well equiped kitchen, basically the only thing that's missing is a bar. So don't forget to bring your own beer before you visit...
