“Curious place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

This was a curious place to visit. The town certainly had the feel of being left behind several decades ago, but there was not a feel for what it really was. Our guide said it had been a gold mining town but there was nothing major done to capitalize on that. A few pictures and things in the general store but that seemed to be about it. There were lots of shop stalls, of the flea market type, around to buy things and a couple of restaurants, but that was about it. There were few tourists about and it felt like it was a place waiting for something to happen. It did make a nice rest stop in our tour but don't spend all that much time here.

“Creepy little town”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

I really wouldn't recommend stopping at this town. The description on all the tourism sites are very misleading, the tourist area is one short road of average little shops. We found it quite depressing walking around and there were more beggers than we had ever seen in our years of travelling to south Africa. We couldn't turn our heads without being asked for money. We couldn't wait to jump back in our car and head back to Graskop! Definitely not the lively, historical town we were expecting.

“Quaint town”

A quaint town stuck in the past. Get a view into the lives of miners way back when! The whole town is a museum and every shop, pub or coffee shop is in theme

“What a disgrace”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014 via mobile

This was the most amazing little town to visit and share in the history of the gold rush. It has been taken over by street traders & car guard/washers who harass you before you even found a parking. I have been here several times in the past but will never go back. They really turned this beautiful town into a cheap flea market. So so disappointed! Don't waste your time going here.

I have been to Pelgrim's Rest a few years ago, and was very dissappointed to find the town so quiet and dull now. A lot of the old little shops closed down, that made the place so special. We will definitely not be returning to Pelgrim's Rest
