Main shrine Lord Shiva is the highlight of the temple. Excellent display of ancient tamilian architectural skill,Peace giving location. We can even look at the grami script that are engraved in the pillars of the temple.

Much has been written about this temple - and all I can add is that it does not disappoint. It is grand in size and proportion, exquisite in execution and serene in its atmosphere.

Being a UNESCO World Heritage site, this temple was on our ticklist of places to visit, and it definitely did not disappoint. The grandeur of the architecture was amazing. I'd highly recommend getting a guide for the temple as it really brings the sculpture and history to life. One thing to be aware of with the guides however, is that local shops/artisans give them commission for bringing customers, hence one should avoid this tourist trap.

Been to india several times and after awhile one can become templed out but we were very fortunate to have an excellent government guide who brought the temple alive. Fascinating temple and history. We would highly recommend a visit.

So many have sung paeans to the magnificence and beauty of Raja Raja Chola's vision yet it's spendour and majesty defies words.

The sheer size of stunning as there is almost no comparison, at least in India. The temple tower (Vimanam) brings to the mind the pyramids. It's that tall (216 metres).

This temple is in the middle of Thanjavur town, a major World Heritage tourist attraction and a very popular practicing Shiva temple so be early or expect rush.
