Reviewed 16 March 2014

My wife and I stayed at the Blue Moon in March 2014 and we'd completely agree with the other reviewers.

The hotel is tucked away about 10-15 mins drive from the port and it is pretty conveniently located for the boat/kayak trip up the river to the waterfalls.

There is not much else around and not much to do, but that's part of the point. It's right on one of the best beaches on the island and next door to a nature reserve so it's really peaceful and a lovely place to while away the days. They also have a roof terrace which is great to lie on at night and stargaze.

The staff were lovely - very friendly and more than willing to go out of their way to help. They picked us up from the ferry and also phoned around to find us a scooter to hire. When they found one for us, they walked us over to it and helped us out with the language barrier. They also offered to drive us into town if we needed anything.

We ate at the Blue Moon itself - the food wasn't anything special, but it was pretty good and they were very generous with the shots of Awamori (which were more like half pint glasses of tequila!).

Overall, it definitely seemed like one of the best options on the island. I would definitely recommend renting some wheels while you're there though - either scooter or a car will do.

Blue Moon have some pedal bikes to rent for 800 yen a day, and the hotel next door rent out some scooters which are a bit rough around the edges, but fine to nip up to the other beaches and into town.

Room Tip: All the rooms overlook the beach so there's probably not much difference between them.

Iriomote jima is all about peace and quiet. Royal Blue Moon fits the locale perfectly. The staff is warm and friendly and go out of the way to make your stay pleasant. It is more like an extended family!
I need to go to the post office, they offered a lift. We ended up having a guest and staff party as we hunkered down during a typhoon. The staff called their friend over to play sanshin (Okinawa music) and we all had a great time.
The hotel is active in the neighborhood with staff participating in clean ups and festivals. Royal Blue Moon is a great way to absorb the island tempo and lifestyle!

My wife and I stayed at the Blue Moon as the first ever non-Japanese guests! However I'm sure there will be more visitors from all over the world soon. The hotel has a great location right at the sea. It is a bit off from civilization, yet so is the entire island. There is a great small restaurant in walking distance. The staff is incredibly friendly and will drive you to various locations around the island if necessary, including ferry port pick-up and drop-off. To get most out of the island I strongly advise to rent a car though.
Out of the hotels that the island has to offer I think this is certainly one of the best choices, especially considering the price.
In summary: a lovely hotel on a great island. Thumbs up!

Room Tip: Book early to get a sea-view room. Additionally to the view, the rooms are just much nicer.
