“A Post Trek Refuge”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

On our 3rd trekking trip to Nepal we decided to stay somewhere other than Kathmandu's Thamel district after our trek. We were really pleased with this choice. From the friendly, welcoming staff, to the large bright room, inner courtyard, lovely grounds, hilltop views of the city and surrounding farmland, it was a great place to relax, visit Bhaktapur and try to recover from the Khumbu Cough that we picked up on our trek. The food was very good and a nice change from guesthouse fare. We stayed 3 nights prior to leaving Nepal which for us was enough time in the Bhaktapur area. We have found cheaper places in the Kathmandu Valley, but overall this was the nicest hotel we've stayed in the area.

Room Tip: The brightest rooms are on the city side of the hotel.

I chose this hotel as it was so highly rated by trip adviser reviews. Having now stayed there, the rating really surprised me. The hotel was fine, nice friendly staff and good food. However, it wasn't great for the price. Firstly, the room and bathroom had a distinct unpleasant smell to them. So before exploring Bhaktapur, we needed to open all the windows to air the room out. The hot water also didn't work in the evening, but they were able to get it going in the morning. Another minor inconvenience was that the twin share room had three oversized singles/very small double beds rather than one comfortable one we could share. Importantly also to note that this hotel is a decent walk from Bhaktapur. I don't mind walking during the day, but at night in an unfamiliar place, and through quiet streets, it doesn't feel safe. it would have been better for us to stay somewhere in or closer to Bhaktapur so we didn't have to worry about this issue. In saying all of this, if you are looking for a retreat away from the touristy area, this place is ok, although I've experienced much, much better hotels for this price in Nepal.

Bhaktapur bills itself as a living museum which it certainly is. As such, it's popular with tourists. That is what makes this hotel a delight. It's within easy walking distance of the action, but it has a serene setting which seems miles away. The attentive staff create a welcoming stay.

The rooms are generously sized, scrupulously clean, and have lovely views. What also sets this hotel a part is the excellent food. I usually find hotel food ordinary at best but this place has excellent food. My friend ordered an Italian dish and I chose Indian. We were equally impressed.

Although we only stayed one night, I could have easily stayed longer.

My partner and I booked this hotel purely on its excellent trip advisor reviews. Whilst the hotel room was clean and the food very good, we were surprised by just how bad the pollution was. Our Rough guides book warned us that pollution in the Kathmandu valley is bad and to stay no longer than 2 days but we didn't realise until we got there just how correct this advice was. There is a constant smell of smoke/ burning from this hotel ( or any hotel in Bhaktaphur itself I should add). This comes from the burning of rubbish at all hours of the day (including plastic which is very toxic) From the hotel room window you can see the burning of rubbish which for me ruined the stunning views. Whilst the hotel cannot be blamed for this, I feel it is important to highlight this. I also feel that I should add that as tourist our carbon footprint is far larger than the locals and in fact we use considerably more plastics and no doubt contribute to the problem and the bigger issue of how we dispose of rubbish.

My partner and I both came down with chest infections from the pollution. Whilst the temples in Bhaktaphur are stunning, I would strongly advise seeing this in a day and getting out of the valley as soon as you can. Bring a face mask!

Expect to pay European prices for alcohol in the hotel. Staff are friendly but we found they charged us far over the normal price for taxis.

What a fantastic hotel! If you are visiting Bhaktapur then this is the place to stay. We couldn't have wished for a friendlier and more helpful staff especially our new friend Martin. The hotel is quiet, peaceful and in a wonderful setting. About 10 - 15 mins stroll into the old town depending on how laid back you have become. Our room was very big and the beds extremely comfortable. The hotel has the added advantage of it's own generator which is necessary in Nepal. Food was delicious especially the tomato omelette for breakfast. We are seasoned travellers (2 mid fifties ladies) and this hotel has everything we wished for. Thanks to all the wonderful staff, we shall be back next year for sure!

We had a wonderful two-night stay at Planet Bhaktapur. When we arrived at the hotel I was disappointed to find out it was outside of Bhaktapur, but we came to appreciate the quiet, green landscape and the expansive views from our windows. The ancient town of Bhaktapur deserves its World Heritage status and we had hoped to stay in the old city center, but the fifteen minute walk from our lodging to town was actually easy and pleasant and a stay in town may have been noisy and hectic.

Planet Bhaktapur has all the basics but is by no means a luxury hotel. However, the sincere thoughtfulness shown to their guests more than makes up for any lack of luxuries. From the minute we arrived, Yam, the owner/manager made us feel welcomed. He and other staff would walk around the tables during meal times and spend considerable time chatting with each guest. It was a nice opportunity to get to acquainted with some Nepali people and learn a bit about their culture.

Another highlight of this hotel was the food. Yam's partner is an Italian man and the food is delicious and authentic Italian. We especially like the eggplant and lasagna. They use fresh ingredients from their garden. Basil was growing right outside the window. It's not that we don't like Nepali food but the Italian cuisine was a nice change of pace.

If you're looking for warm hospitality and a quiet retreat Planet Bhaktapur would be an excellent choice for your lodging.
