“Dingy hotel, soviet style service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2012

The hotel was pretty dumpy but I suppose that's not terribly surprising considering the price. The service, however, was abysmal. The surly owner dragged his feet doing everything (providing soap, toilet paper, providing transportation, serving breakfast). He couldn't care less about the comfort of his guests.

We stayed in March and it was very cold all around Khiva... so beside we were frozen we liked the place.

I liked the owner, the rooms and the location. Free wifi is big benefit in Uzbekistan.

We stayed in this family-run hotel for 1 night but we were allowed to make late check-out (at 7pm) for free. This place has 20 rooms. There is a open-air terrace with nice view to sit there in the evening. Free wi-fi is available but unfortunately it works too bad. We booked triple but the room when we stayed had 4 beds. This room was big enough but bathroom equipment didn't work properly. Breakfast was simple but OK. The best thing to say about this place is it's locating. Just in the heart of the old-town. 2 minutes from Nothern Gate (it's possible to climb the town wall and walk there). Hotel offers taxi service (to the airport and to Buhara and tours for reasonable price).

I strongly reccomend this hotel for a stay in Khiva. Clean and tidy with spacious rooms and comfortable beds. They have no water shortages which is quite common in Uzbekistan. The staff is kind and helpful - you can speak with them in both English and Russian. Location is also perfect - right in the heart of Khiva's Old Town, so it takes 5 minute walk to visit all places of interest in this ancient town. And the price is reasonable: 25-35 USD (depending on the room's equipment) for a double room.

I am thoroughly surprised to find some negative reviews about the Islambek hotel. I have stayed at this hotel for three days and I never found anything to complain about this place. I stayed along with my wife and our two little girls here. The room was clean and the cleaning maid visits it every day to clean it up. The air conditioning was very good. Our kids slept along with us in our bed which was large enough and comfortable with clean sheets on it. The hotel’s location is also great. The owners weren’t overly friendly but I always found them ready to lend a helping hand. What else does someone expect from the management?

I agree with another reviewer - this place is quite charmless. It has an excellent location, but that's about it. Room size is OK, but the whole place feels shabby and is not well-maintained. It is family run; no one speaks more than very basic English, and no one is particularly friendly. The owner did go out of his way to help me with one issue, but usually he is indifferent to his clients. The breakfast was the worst I had anywhere in three weeks in Uzbekistan.

We booked this hotel because of it's location inside the Ichan Kala. It was very shabby and run down and turned out to be the worst of all the hotels & B&Bs we stayed in in Uzbekistan. At $40 per night for a double it was overpriced. Our room was large with air conditioning but the bed linen had a strange smell. The shower was a dribble. The water was routinely turned off overnight - not pleasant when you have an upset stomach and can't flush the toilet.
On the plus side the breakfasts were very good and plentiful.
