On our recent trip to Pictured Rocks we decided to rent a pontoon and see the cliffs and waterfalls from the lake. This was arguably the best way to see the sights, and we definitely did not regret spending the money on the luxury of being able to freely explore the area. There are lots of touring options on the water, such as the glass bottomed boat tours and the Pictured Rocks Cruises, but there's nothing like being able to pack your own lunch and explore things at your own pace! You can choose what you want to see, where you want to stop, for how long, etc. (Also, if you're lucky enough, you can get close to the tour boats at particular stops and overhear what the tour guides are saying).
There are other pontoon rentals available in the Munising area, but we decided to go with Seaberg because they are a family business, and you can tell. They are super friendly, and the pontoons leave from the dock right in front of their house. They're easy-going yet professional and very welcoming to visitors in the area.
Seaberg rents pontoons for 3 hour, 5 hour, or half day blocks. They give you a good map of things to see, and offer life vests for the family and pets. The pontoons are clean, offer a privacy chamber (e.g. bucket in a curtain to do your business) and enough gas to enjoy the cliffs, Grand Island, and more. We rented our pontoon for 5 hours but only went out for about 3-4, and they only charged us for the time we were out on the water, which was appreciated.
I would recommend Seaberg Pontoon rentals for anyone who wants to see the cliffs from the water on their own time and schedule. The kayaking is also great in the area but you obviously can't do that if you have a dog or small children. Be sure to stop at the fishouse next door to get some smoked fish for a treat when you stop to eat on a beach or on the water!
