We went volcano boarding with Tierra Tours through Hostel Colibri at 8am with a group of 10 altogether. Our tour guide spoke excellent english and informed us very well. The hike up was difficult for me, though I am not particularly fit and have a lung condition, so I did struggle. Also I didn't have trainers, only hiking sandals - so I wore socks underneath (very trendy... not) which actually did the trick. I wouldn't recommend open-toe shoes sans socks, and definitely not flip-flops!
The guide stopped at a shop on the way to buy fruit for us all to eat after the volcano boarding, and gave a chance to buy water (1 to 1.5 litres needed each).
At the volcano we stopped to take pictures before signing in at the registration hut where there were toilets. We were shown the seismologist's hut in the distance, and then each given a backpack with our gear, and a board (standing or seated options).
We walked some of the way up the volcano, and clambered up a few steep sections, with a break every 10-15 mins. We stopped at a great look out/photo point and carried on to the top. Very beautiful views. Some weird bugs at the top, and a bunch of bees that swarmed us made it all the more interesting an experience!
The boarding itself was so much fun! We had good protection - elbow & knee pads, jumpsuit, gloves & goggles. The drive to and from the volcano was beautiful too, the driver stopped to identify exotic birds such as the national bird of Nicaragua and let us take pictures. There were lots of horses and carts too.
Really lovely little adventure and well worth the $30.
