“Itchy!!!”
Reviewed 5 March 2014 via mobile

Sonati is so relaxed that they forget to clean and properly check. The kitchen and whole place is dirty and the room was very dirty with a huge dead cockroach behind the toilet, a fan with weeks if not months of black stuff hanging from it and worst of all: bugs!!! After a long sleepless and very itchy night I was ever so happy it got light and I could not leave this dreadfull place fast enough. A pity as I like their philosophy and activities and wanted to support them. The staff took my complaints serious, but I had to bring all my luggage to the laundry and won't sleep for some more nights as I got bitten all over.

The hostel was great for the price you pay. The kitchen was big and great for cooking dinner/breakfast, with the market located closely nearby. If you would like to relax, this hostel is great, with many older travellers staying here. If you are after a party hostel then perhaps around the corner would be better suited to you. We stayed in a private dorm which was very spacious for four people, I found the beds extremely high with no banister which was a bit of a concern personally. However, all in all, I enjoyed my stay here and the communal area was great to relax at.

Room Tip: Private rooms are extremely spacious and not overly expensive.

Sonati provides a relaxed and comfortable environment for those less inclined to stay at bustling "party hostels". The staff are really friendly and happy to organise any & all activities regarding the nearby volcanoes or beach. If partying is your scene, the staff are also happy to tell (or even show you) where to go in town. The place itself is in a great location, close to good shopping and food and I'd thoroughly recommend staying.

This hostel was decent for the price, however the bathroom and kitchen were messy. I would not have stayed there for more than one night, i found the atmosphere depressing. I recommend staying at tortuga boluda

I recently brought 22 students to stay at Sonati and we also used their guiding services for 11 days. They did an excellent job with the tours, making sure we had everything we needed, and were very professional. The hostel is similar to others in that it is extremely cheap, so don't expect anything fancy, but it was clean and safe. It had a very quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Apparently some of the hostels in Leon included bars and live music and had a party reputation. As a bonus, Sonati is a nonprofit, and they work in environmental education, so by staying there you are supporting those efforts. Highly recommended.

I sought this one out especially because of their self-advertised do-gooder status but what I stumbled upon was a clique-ish hostel where volunteers and staff have largely taken over and other, random guests cannot get access o common areas. There is a lot of smoking on site and the rooms are super-shabby. It’s a very “echoey” property.

The beds and fans were good quality. Hostels are always about the energy of the clients but as I said, the volunteers and staff seem to make up the bulk of the crowd at Sonati and they might want to consider giving some of the guests a shot at enjoying the hostel, too.

Hi SocklessJ,

We're sorry that you didn't feel included at the hostel. We do have a number of volunteers and staff who regularly interact with guests at the hostel as part of the tours and other programs that we run. We strive to be inclusive and indeed most guests value and appreciate the family atmosphere of the hostel.

As a budget hostel offering dorms from $5 a night, we strive to be as clean and functional as possible, and believe the cosy hostel lives up to that standard. Smoking is permitted in the courtyard, though we will take that feedback on board and encourage smokers to ensure they stick to the designated areas.

Thankyou for mentioning - we do also strive to 'do-good' - all the profits from the hostel fund environmental education and conservation programs throughout Nicaragua, which the volunteers work hard to facilitate.

Warm Regards,
Sonati

The dorm is cheap and good. Free coffee in the morning. But the reason why you want to stay at SONATI is the amazing atmosphere and the friendly staff. I was only planning to stay at SONATI for a couple of days but I ended up staying there for a month. You feel at home at SONATI and if you stay there for a couple of days, you dont want to leave again. Great place to learn spanish as well as it is not only foreigners volunteering but also locals working at the hostel. If you are in Leon you have to check it out.
