Posada Fuente Castalia
Ranked #3 of 36 Leon B&B and Inns
Reviewed 11 December 2013

The hotel we were booked in Leon was overbooked and they wanted us to move to Posada Fuente Castalia for our last 2 nights. We walked to it and after meeting Dona Maria, we decided to stay there for our entire visit. Don Pedro served as our private guide while we were there taking us all around the area and back to the airport. They have a family farm where they grow all their own vegs. we ate for our specially cooked excellent breakfast. The B&B was close to all the downtown attractions. I'm a travel agent and expect great things and we got them!!!! A must do: when you visit the cathedral be sure to climb to the roof for a 360 deg. view of Leon and the many volcanos.

This was a great experience on our first trip to Leon. The rooms were clean, secure and cozy, with air conditioning and wi-fi. And they were quiet -a thing we found to be rare in our experience of Nicaraguan hotels. We were located on the bottom floor so in our room we traded hot water for our showers for a quiet sleep on the nights it rained (no roof above for the rain to pound on). Pick your comfort level. The breakfasts were amazing and the service was wonderful. We were well taken care of.

As a family of four expats living in Costa Rica we decided to visit Nicaragua to learn more about the people who come from this area and see the country we had been hearing so much about. Doña Maria and Don Pedro's Posada was the perfect place to launch our trip. Their Posada is lovely and welcoming. The perfect place to rest after a day exploring, and to escape the heat. They took all the time we need to explain, in Spanish, their city, lives, and some dream. They are both former teachers! Don Pedro drove us to the beach and explained some of the history as we went. Doña Maria even gave trompos to my boys when we asked where to buy them. And we met many boys young and old playing tromp in the city center. The room we shared was excellent with firm beds, clean linens, nicely appointed, and air conditioning. We have stayed in many family run places in both Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and this was our favorite family to stay with. If you don't speak Spanish, their daughter Millie speaks excellent English and is usually around to help.

My husband and I stayed here for a week while we scoped out housing / life in Leon as we're planning to move there in a few months. It really was lovely. Dona Maria and Milly were very kind and helpful - above and beyond really. When we needed to find an accountant for my husband's business or we were looking for houses, they were happy to share their connections. My husband enjoyed the opportunity to practice his budding Spanish and I really was glad to get a deeper view of the culture and life there in a little more in-depth conversations (I already speak Spanish). They were so kind to fix us a Nicaraguan or European breakfast depending on what we'd most enjoy. We stayed in an unairconditioned room the first night and I had intended to change that even though I'd booked it to begin with... which they were happy to do, but after the first night, we found that with the powerful fans in the unairconditioned rooms we really didn't need AC anyway... which makes the price a great deal too! I loved that this wasn't a 'party hostel' at all and a really nice chance to soak in a bit of the real culture of Leon. It's in a quieter district of the downtown but quite walkable to all the sights. Highly recommended! I'm so glad we'll have some friends already when we make our move!

We stayed three nights at the Posada Fuente Castalia in Leon, Nicaragua. It is a charming hotel. The family who owns and operates the hotel was extremely welcoming. They helped us organize transportation to other areas in Nicaragua and patiently listened to our broken Spanish, which we wanted to practice. The common areas are lovely, filled with beautiful antiques, and the rooms are clean and very comfortable. Every morning we were served a delicious breakfast. We would most happily stay at the Posada again, if we ever get the chance to return to Leon.

Room Tip: Leon is hot. We enjoyed the air conditioning, especially at night.

My husband and I stayed for 3 days in November 2012. While a bit of a walk to city center it was still accessible to restaurants, the market and other sites. We were struck by the family antiques surrounding the wonderful courtyard. Tilly and Maria Teresa were so welcoming and helpful. Tilly's English was useful and our Spanish is minimal. We stayed on one of the second floor rooms with air conditioning and enjoyed the seating area on the small landing. For the beach part of our trip, Tilly recommended Surfing Turtle Lodge to us in Poneloya and arranged our transportation.
