We drove to this beach after a recommendation, but found it absolutely empty and not worth the drive. It is very wide, but it was, after all, just another beach..

We went for a day trip to Las Penitas from Leon. It was amazing to walk on the sandy beach and enjoying the waves of the Pacific ocean combined with the warm wind and the sunshine. After the long walk had a well deserved beer and a lobster in one of the restaurants. The food is very cheap and most of the hostels and restaurants have an ocean view.
I think this place is mostly for surfers because of the Pacific waves but we enjoyed our staying anyway.

We took a bus the first time we visited which was slow but really cheap and fairly empty in the week. The second time we went it was the weekend and we ended up taking at taxi as there were queues and I've never seen so many people crammed into a chicken bus. The beaches are lovely, clean and great places to watch surfers and collect shells. We took a tour of the mangroves with Moses from Barca de Ora to see the wildlife. He was very knowledgeable and we saw a huge variety of birds. before coming back for fresh fish, cold beers and a beautiful sunset.
Well worth a visit.

We visited Las Penitas last year and we LOVED it! its many restaurants and bars just makes it more appealing, after a busy morning in Leon this is the best combination for a perfect day.

After taking a local bus to the playas of Leon , you can take a local boat for 50 dollars to the natural parc and mangroves to see the wildlife (birds , aligators (we did'nt see 1)) . After 1 hour , you reach the place where turtles came to drop their eggs in the sand. Still continuing to the south (direction salineras) , you reach the banks where locals collect wild crabs after kicking them with a stick from the rocks. This playa is so quiet and beautifull !
