Los Balcones in the city centre of León is a very beautiful place, it is a colonial style building and very open, with a lot of nice places where you can enjoy, sit, read and relax.

The staff is very welcoming and helpful and the breakfast is included - you can choose from three different types of breakfast.

We spent two nights in this really nice place and we hope to come back soon!!

Room Tip: The rooms in the upper part of the hotel have more space and ventilation because you can open the do...

This is a very cozy place, nice, clean. I slept in a very romantic and old fashioned ambiance. This hotel was a the familiar house of the Herdocia Family and was built in 1814. The breakfast was great you are in the heart of Leon. Everyone there are willing to help you

Room Tip: The rooms in the second floor are better, you get your own balcony

Didnt sleep in the hotel, but had breakfast on two days in this place. The restaurant at the hotel looks vey nice and staff is very ok. Good service, very helpful. Breakfast was very good, both the continental as the a la carte.

Cannot say anything about the rooms, but the hotel and staff looked very proper, so my guess is that the rooms are fine in this place (but not for sure...). If you want to have some nice food, this place is ok.

We stayed at this hotel and found very friendly workers, excellent location. If you have a special request, they are able to assist you. We stayed in a room with a beautiful view of the cathedral. Nice colonial buiding with balconies. In our next visit to León we will be staying there.

Having just returned home from a 30 day trip and adventure to Granada, Corn Island, San Juan del Sur, Leon and Montelimar Nicaragua, my wife and I had a wonderful experience of this country and its people. No matter what occurred we would not have wanted to miss any part of it.

Our flight from Toronto was booked by me on Air Canada to Miami and then onto Managua by TACA, the flight was smooth and got us in on time.

All of our accommodations, local land transfers and flight to Corn Islands between 5 locations were handled by a very professional local Managua/Granada travel outfit, MP Travel Agency.

Our fourth destination for 5 days was in the city of Leon, a city known for its old charm and less touristy atmosphere than Granada. Although initially wishing to stay at the La Perla hotel with the pool, being booked solid for a wedding, we chose the Hotel Los Balcones closer to the city center and are glad we did.

This hotel has old world charm and character, beautiful small court yard, and a limited number or rooms so that all guests staying here are treated like family. The staff and management of the hotel did everything to make us feel at home, friendly, attentive and appreciative of our visit. Glad we did not book La Perla Hotel, checked their pool, small and not in a nice setting.

The hotel abuts two major streets and during most of the day there is traffic and at night some noise does filter into the room, room location does matter, however, ask front desk for your preference when booking. The room we had, faced the main street, had no real window but a double door opening up to a balcony, the AC, Wi-Fi and TV worked flawlessly, and even a hot shower, electrically heated as water passes through the shower head.

The onsite small restaurant provided breakfast and any other meals throughout the day, quality and quantity was very good.

We explored most parts of the inner city, churches, parks and squares on foot and tried various restaurants, all inexpensive (compared to Granada, about 30% less), they all offered different menus and atmosphere.

Shopping for textiles and clothes was enjoyable and the prices varied widely, however, still a bargain to North American costs, jeans $12, shirt $ 8, cloth C$ 60 per yard.

However, in Leon, the tourist industry is still starting up and we encountered outrages costs for tours based on the country’s living standard, just a short 2 and a half hour tour to old Leon, (skipped La Fortin which was part of initial request) driver and guide, was $ 60 USD, another tour operator for city tour with group of people was $ 15 each, this was for a tour that can easily be walked while reading a book on the sites. A tour to the local beach and mangrove boat tour was $ 70 each, can do it with taxi for $15-20, local fisherman boat about the same, total for 2 to 3 people.

One thing about Leon, first day or two we were not too impressed by the city, however, later on, started to enjoy it while getting to know more about the people, they are different from other areas of Nicaragua. First night in Leon, fist fight between two females on main street occurred, security guard let them sort out their own problems, people watched, that’s it.

The other location, Granada and Hotel Granada, San Juan del Sur and the Inn on the Pacific, Corn Island and the Paraiso Resort, Montelimar and the Barcelo Hotel are covered under each of their own reviews.

Room Tip: Ask front desk for type of room, some are noisier and some do not have windows.

Looks a nice hotel from the outside but rooms are dingy, dirty and can be noisy. Aircon costs an additional $15 per night. No internet machine but free wi fi. OK but could easily be much better.
