“Good place to stay”
Reviewed 24 March 2014 via mobile

The building is charming as well as the staff. Our room was a little noisy given the activity in the street but other rooms are facing the parking lot. Restaurant is ok and breakfast is good (nica style)
They work with julio tours who's the best tour company in Leon.

What a beautiful place to wake up in the former capital of Nicaragua. Conveniently located in town, within walking distance of all we needed. The interior gardens are immaculately kept and provided a peaceful scene for our breakfast each morning. Only a few things were odd: 1. When there is double occupancy, and a married couple, they give you a room with 2 queen beds, and 2. some things were inconsistent, like the offerings and service at breakfast and the maintenance availability and effectiveness for an issue in a room. The air conditioning worked very well, but was leaking water. We left for the day one morning, letting them know there was a puddle of water, and upon our return in the afternoon, they wanted us to move to another room. We opted not to as this was just work for us rather than hear some dripping of water on the floor. The staff is nice. The parking is secure and guarded. The artifacts and artwork in the hotel vary from the "ridiculous to the sublime" - everything from religious altars and icons to paintings of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis. That just added to the interest of the surroundings. Would stay here again.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a room that overlooks the inner courtyard/garden to minimize the noise you would he...

We spent two nights here while touring Leon. Although it looks as if it were the original convent, it actually is a replica, as the original one had been destroyed. The rooms are air conditioned and ours had two queen beds. The beds and pillows were comfortable, and the shower worked well, producing hot water at any time. There was a mini fridge in the bathroom.

The hotel has beautiful antiques throughout its hallways, and a nice courtyard with foliage and flowers. There was a wonderful breeze throughout the hotel areas, and we were very comfortable in all shaded areas, finding no need to sit in the air-conditioned dining room when we could enjoy our meals outside in the shaded areas. Breakfast was included. It was adequate, with scrambled eggs, rice, beans, fresh fruit, assorted breads and rolls, yogurt, and beverages, as well as sausage and bacon.
We ate lunch in the restaurant two days, and thought the shrimp on lettuce was the best meal we had in Leon.
After touring in the heat our first day, we decided to be wise, and actually spent the majority of the second day in the pool area. The pool was inviting, and there were many comfy lounges, sofas, and chairs for us to relax, with many being in the shade. Later that day when the temperature dipped to around 93, we met with our tour guide, seeing everything we missed on day one.
The ladies who cleaned had a good attitude, and were very willing to please. Front desk was not always as friendly, depending upon who was working the desk. We can speak conversational Spanish, which was helpful, as not all of the front desk staff spoke English.
We liked the location of the hotel, the cleanliness of everything, the antiques and the pool, so we would recommend this hotel to others.

Room Tip: Request a room facing the courtyard so you will not get the street noise.

A wonderful surprise awaits everyone who walks in the door of Hotel El Convento. Lovely gardens, beautiful furnishings in a tranquil setting. The service was great--I reported that a hall light was out, and it was replaced immediately. I didn't want to leave this lovely hotel!

Room Tip: Get a room on the garden side if possible. Beautiful views and very quiet.

Two lovely nights at this wonderful hotel. Architecture is marvelous, location convenient to town center and sights. Attentive staff, very good breakfast buffet and dinner menu. Courtyard fountain is great to walk around at night and look up at the stars. Lots of artworks and colonial style furniture and bric a brac contribute to atmosphere. Only drawback….very very poor water pressure in the shower in the morning.

We stayed two nights in this charming hotel within easy walking of the main square and massive Cathedral. Leon is a place to go if architecture and churches are for you, it is lively but not as well preserved as Granada.

El Convento Hotel is what it says, a former convent with a central garden which is beautifully kept and has plenty of resident bird life.

The rooms are situated in a square shape outside the quadrangle, some look in towards the garden (as did ours, number 29) whereas others back on to street or the rear car park and consequently have a much poorer outlook.

Staff speak very little to no English so you do need some Spanish here and service is not quite up to the mark of other places. Nonetheless when we arrived the room safe was nowhere to be seen and they quickly installed one so good marks for this.

The room itself is large with a nice bath, simply but tastefully decorated but the corridors are full of nice antiques and there are some very large function rooms near the restaurant.

Breakfast was a relatively simple affair with a buffet (ingredients varied) and although it was not our original plan we ended up dining here both nights. We were looking at other places, one asked for $30 advance payment to reserve a table(!!) and we walked out of the other as they had almost none of the ingredients on their menu (not surprisingly there was no one in the La Perla). So we went back to El Convento and what a good decision it was. Although there was no fish the first night everything we ate was extremely tasty and well presented. Service a little on the slow side but the waiters were very friendly and were interested in engaging with us English.

There is also a small swimming pool at the back, we did not get the chance to use it but it can be blisteringly hot in Leon so probably a good place to cool off.

Leon is probably a place you only visit once but although not cheap El Convento is well worthy of consideration.
.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the inner courtyard and garden should be much quieter

We stayed two nights in the hotel and enjoyed them both. The hotel is centrally located in a gorgeous renovated convent with beautiful gardens and courtyards. It still contains amazing artwork and altars from its former life. Lovely rooms, decent breakfast, helpful staff. We highly recommend staying there!
